I was talking to my son this morning. He said he had a math test and on that test there would be 35 problems to be solved. That seemed like a lot of questions to me because he is 17 so the math he is taking is more complex. My response was that it seemed like a lot of questions.
My son explained that even though there are 35 questions on the test, only 20 count and whatever remains is bonus. Basically, he gets to do whatever he wants on the test and if 20 are right, he will get a 100%.
He said his strategy would be to knock out the ones he knows quickly so that he could get to the harder ones and spend more time on them. I responded “Don’t rush through the ones you should get right and make mistakes on those. Those are the most important ones to make sure you get right.”
I had to smile when I thought about it. It made me consider how many topics there are to talk about and debate; how many causes to champion. It is not that these things are wrong to do, but we must give due time to those things that we ought to get right and spend remaining time going for the bonus.
I remember one time my mother said she was going out and told us to clean our rooms. I clean my room, but my sister ran around cleaning up the whole house. When my mother came home and saw it was still a mess, she expressed her unhappiness that she didn’t clean her room. My sister was very upset because she had done all that work and my mother was ungrateful. My mother responded, “If you had cleaned your room and other places I would have been thrilled. But I only asked you to do one thing and you didn’t do it.”
Matthew 6:33
“33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
I’ve always thought of this passage in relation to worldly matters and putting God first. Today I see that it can apply to spiritual matters as well. I need to make sure I spend more time getting the things right that I can do and let the rest be bonus.
