Prayers Of David: What Is In A Name

Text: Psalms 20:1-9

"The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah. Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfill all thy counsel. We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfill all thy petitions. Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Save, Lord: let the king hear us when we call"

This is one great Psalm to memorize. Psalms 20 is one of my favorite psalms while growing up. I have heard my mother recites over and again that it took less effort for me to memorize its contents. How inspiring this Psalm is, it is an insurance in the day of crisis. This Psalms reminds us that in the days of crisis we can call on the name of Christ. Why? For God has given him a name above every other name that at the name of Jesus, every knee must bow! Solomon, the son of David had learned from his father's writings on the power of the name of the Lord, he wrote himself in Proverbs 18:10, that the name of the Lord is a strong tower the righteous runs into it and they are saved! This is the worth of the name of the Lord: it is a defense and it excels above all names!

In every crisis, we can call on the name of Christ!

The question is, in the days of trouble whose name do you remember? In the days of trouble, David remembered the NAME OF THE LORD, so he prayed, 'may the name of the God of Jacob defend thee'. Are you going through any trial and it seems you are without defense? God's name will defend you now! In the days of crisis the first call you made, either physical or spiritual call, determines whose name rules your life!

David understood the worth of Gods name, at every juncture of trouble the name of the Lord becomes a resort and a refuge. Psalm 116, here we see another celebration of Gods name by David.

"I love the Lord because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful" (Psalm 116:1-5)

And just like Psalms 20, Psalm 116 also celebrates the name of the Lord. Three times David mentioned the name of the Lord! Furthermore in Psalm 118:10-11 David boasted of his faith in that name, "All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord will I destroy them. They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord I will destroy them". There is nothing that surrounds you that cannot surrender to the name of the Lord! Today in the name of Jesus whatever surrounds you will submit to you! Amen!
