Lead Us Not Into Temptation

Luke 11:4

Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’

How many of us take this part of the Lord’s Prayer for granted? That when we pray this, we often are led into temptations afterwards. I know I am guilty of that at times. That I did not trust God and have said that part of the Lord’s prayer almost automatic.

But there is far more to this prayer about temptation. Promises from God like this one.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Or this one:

2 Peter 2:9

then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,

We certainly have the many temptations of the world around us to distract us if we let them. And, as we are generally social, we can be unwittingly led into temptation to sin by others. At those times, God certainly did not lead us into temptation to sin—we chose to sin, even unwittingly.

The social media is a good example. How many things do we unwittingly post something or pass on posts----- that if we actually thought about it with our conscience in mind, we would certainly take back afterward? The trouble is our words are preserved. We often post just our opinions which often has nothing to do with God’s truth in mind. And, it seems to be getting worse—especially on the political side of things.

I actually had a discussion on this Board with a member of a cult I used to belong to where he said we have to face “heart wrenching temptations daily’” and it cause me to remember this part of the Lord’s Prayer.

Trust God in your prayers and do not let yourself be led into temptations even unwittingly.
