The earliest Christians were already part of a religion, the Jewish one. What they taught was not that particular religion, but an addenda. They, as part of that addenda, only taught the Gospel of the Kingdom and a way of life to be lived. Both ran contrary to the traditional ways of man.
They did not create a new religion until the Gentiles came along and set up shop, unnecessarily taking the old religion and the addenda and slowly weeding out the Jewish aspect while they created a whole new governing body. The Gentiles had no reason to create a new governing body as Jesus had come to rid us of just that. Humans love to be bossy.
Christianity could have proceeded along fine as only the Gospel of the Kingdom and a way of life. Man took the focus off the will of God and turned it back into the world and will of man.
