Some of the professers of faith in Jesus Christ were taking one another to court with lawsuits against one another, and they were wronging and defrauding their professed brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus. And so Paul was confronting them on these issues. And then he said to them:
Okay, so what was the point of Paul’s message to them? And when he said to them, “Such were some of you; but you were washed..”, what was he saying to them? What was the intended message behind his words? Was he just giving them a light smack on the hand and then assuring them of their salvation and eternal life with God by stating that some of them were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus? And/or was he saying that all of them were righteous in the eyes of God?
If we read all of the New Testament Scriptures we will see that such teachings as this were repeated over again, lots of times, and in many ways, but with the same “bottom line” message. The righteous are not those who profess faith in Jesus Christ with their lips but then go on living in sin, doing what their evil hearts desire. The righteous are those who live righteously, for whom righteous living is their practice, by the grace of God, by faith in Jesus Christ, and in the power, wisdom, and strength of God.
And to live righteously is to walk (in conduct, in practice) according to the will and purpose that God has for us who claim him as our Lord and Savior. And that entails that we die with Christ to sin, not just once, but daily, and that we obey him and his New Covenant commands, in practice, in his power. In the power of God living within us in the person of the Holy Spirit we now live holy lives, pleasing to God, surrendered to our Lord, and sin no longer is what we practice – all by the grace of God, in the power of God.
So, the unrighteous are not just all who make no professions of faith in Jesus Christ, but they are all who are living in unrighteousness in daily practice, for whom sin is still what they practice and not obedience to God and to his commands, even if they profess faith in Jesus with their lips. And that is why Paul said, “such were some of you,” meaning that not all of them had left their lives of living in sin and for self to follow Jesus in obedience. And so this served as a warning to them that they would not inherit the kingdom of God. Heaven would not be their eternal destiny.
And like I said, these kinds of messages to the church, to the professers of Christianity and of faith in Jesus Christ, are all throughout the New Testament Scriptures. We cannot just give lip service to the Lord and then be assured that all our sins are forgiven and heaven is now our eternal destiny. God requires that we die with him to sin and walk in obedience to his commands, in practice, as evidence of believing faith which saves.
So, if you are someone who is deliberately and habitually living in sexual immorality, in its various forms of expression, or if you are giving your honor and dedication to that which is not of God but what is contrary to the will of God, or if you are living in adultery against your spouse, which also comes in various forms, or if you are a self-polluter who submits to unnatural lusts, or if you are having sexual relations with someone of the same sex, or if you are a liar, cheat, thief, drunkard and/or swindler, you will not inherit the kingdom of God, regardless of what you have professed with your lips.
So, we need to take this to heart, for this same message is given to the gatherings of the church, the body of Christ, to all who profess faith in Jesus Christ, and/or who profess to know God, all throughout the New Testament writings. And it serves as a warning to all of us that we must not continue living in sin in willful rebellion against our Lord and against his commands, and then presume upon God that he is going to let us into his heaven. For if sin is our practice, and not obedience to God, we will not see God.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NASB1995)
