It means that in some respect, God is burdening that person with a specific ministry or message. "Anointing" is "Religious terminology" for the OVERT presence of the Holy Spirit in a person's life and the resultant ministry that flows therefrom.

I agree with Bob. In a way, we are all anointed of God, because He has something specific and special that He wants each one of us to do. But generally, being anointed refers to a specific task or job in the area of ministry, where God has given you specific special abilities or Spirit gifts to perform the job(s) He wants you to do.

what do people mean when they say this person or that is "anointed" of God?
Doesn’t it depend on which “people” you ask? For example are there as many supernatural anointings evidenced among those that don’t believe the supernatural gifts are for today. The Holy Spirit is also grieved by religious men that dilute the Word of God according to their own interpretation or denominational teaching.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.(NKJV) John 14:26

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. (NKJV) John 16:13

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. (NKJV) 1 John 2:27

"Anointing" is ... the OVERT presence of the Holy Spirit in a person's life and the resultant ministry that flows therefrom.
Just as the anointing oil was poured on the head of Aaron and over his beard, so too some of His Saints have even felt the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Like the sensation of oil/honey flowing from the top of the head to their chest/heart area. There is often a unique sense/presence/urgency when a special anointing for a specific purpose is then followed by a supernatural manifestation for the purpose of Glorifying God and advancing the Kingdom of God.
I agree with Bob. ... But generally, being anointed refers to a specific task or job in the area of ministry, where God has given you specific special abilities or Spirit gifts to perform the job(s) He wants you to do.

in the OT they would pour olive oil over a persons head - this was to set them apart for particular purpose and was called anointing the person . Samuel took David and poured olive oil over his head anointing him (by Gods command) to be King - he was thus recognized by God (not man) and set apart for the purpose of being the ruling King over Israel

when God spoke his word to save us all, his word became flesh , his name was called Yeshua (one who saves) in English -Jesus .

after he was baptized in the river Jordan ,John the baptist, testifies that he, "saw the spirit of God descending like a dove from heaven and it alighted on him (Jesus).

the Holy Spirit poured down over the lord Jesus- anointing him ,- he is thus officially recognized by God(the father) and set apart (made holy)for the purpose of saving man kind from sin and death - this is why he is called the messiah which means - the one anointed by GOD or from the Greek it translates to the Christ.

in penticostal circles it is often described as "the annointing of the Holy Spirit" - when the presence of the Holy Spirit chooses (by GODS WILL - not mans to rest on a particular individual for a specific reason and purpose setting them apart to fulfill that purpose .ie -the lord wishes to speak to the people so the Holy Spirit anoints some one to speak out in prophecy , healing ,any of the gifts of the Spirit .

when this happens -it is described by using the term you are asking about .it is described as being"under the anointing "

another way would be to say the person is "willingly under the direction of the presence of the Holy Spirit " .

hope that helps to answer your question :)
-----------------------------------

it is important to note that the anointing is not a qualification to do as you wish and say you were(past tense) "anointed"- therefore what you say or do is of God .

it is also important to note that true position in ministry is established by GOD anointing a person to the task he desires them to do - not MEN
when men anoint one another - that is not automaticly recognized by God
and nothing such a person has to say is to be considered infallible in any form or manner .
The Church (= dwelling place of God by his spirit -being all those that are born again of the Spirit of God )can only anoint a person truly to a task if the HEAD, being the LORD JESUS ALONE instructs the body to do so by the Holy Spirit .Who will then bear witness to the will of the lord Jesus by his manifest presence- (the anointing ). for he does only that which is the wil of the lord Jesus and that which glorifies the lamb of God :):):)

add i agree with stormy --- hi there storm..:)

When folks get saved and born again by water (baptism by immersion ) and Spirit - baptism of the Holy Spirit - we are all ,at that point, anointed to(recognized by God and set aside to the task of ) being witnesses of the power and grace and mercy of the salvation of God in Christ Jesus.

this is why those who have been born again of the spirit of God have a desire to share the Gospel, where as so often those that have not been born again of the Spirit are content to say -"it s private thing " or " it between me and God " ..and other weak washy washy excuses .

When they come to be born again they will then realize that the highest priority of God on the earth is the salvation of mankind and how shall they believe if they do not hear and how shall they hear except we tell them ...
