what do people mean when they say this person or that is "anointed" of God?
Doesn’t it depend on which “people” you ask? For example are there as many supernatural anointings evidenced among those that don’t believe the supernatural gifts are for today. The Holy Spirit is also grieved by religious men that dilute the Word of God according to their own interpretation or denominational teaching.what do people mean when they say this person or that is "anointed" of God?
Just as the anointing oil was poured on the head of Aaron and over his beard, so too some of His Saints have even felt the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Like the sensation of oil/honey flowing from the top of the head to their chest/heart area. There is often a unique sense/presence/urgency when a special anointing for a specific purpose is then followed by a supernatural manifestation for the purpose of Glorifying God and advancing the Kingdom of God."Anointing" is ... the OVERT presence of the Holy Spirit in a person's life and the resultant ministry that flows therefrom.
I agree with Bob. ... But generally, being anointed refers to a specific task or job in the area of ministry, where God has given you specific special abilities or Spirit gifts to perform the job(s) He wants you to do.
It means that in some respect, God is burdening that person with a specific ministry or message. "Anointing" is "Religious terminology" for the OVERT presence of the Holy Spirit in a person's life and the resultant ministry that flows therefrom.
