OSLO -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize — but the conflict in Ukraine is also likely to be on the Nobel committee's agenda.

A record 278 candidates, including 47 organizations, received nominations for the 2014 prize, said the Norwegian Nobel Institute's director, Geir Lundestad.

Lots of peace due to that right there.

Putin is a nominee. Well, so too is Edward Snowden. At this point the prize has degenerated into a skit most likely to be found in The Onion.

I beg to disagree - President Obama is not encouraging a province or state in a neighboring country (Canada, Mexico) to separate, nor is he initiating the kind of provocative actions that could provoke another Cold War, or worse!

Unlike the Oscars, being nominated for the Nobel peace prize means absolutely nothing. It seems to happen every year - someone crazy gets nominated. Any of the following people can nominate whoever the heck they want:

Members of national assemblies and governments of states
• Members of international courts
• University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes
• Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
• Board members of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
• Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1)
• Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee )

That's a ton of people who can nominate any person that strikes their fancy.

What I am curious of is how people know Putin was nominated. According the the Nobel Peace Prize page, the names and information on nominations are supposed to be sealed for 50 years.

Care to elaborate? He knew disclosing what he did that he'd either go to jail in the US, or be killed by the gov. He'll be in hiding the rest of his life.
He obviously thought what the gov are doing is wrong, and was in a position to let others know.

Exactly. Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini were all nominated, but none were obviously awarded the prize.

That said - I do believe that the more recent tendency to put "big names" on the list has produced a few clangers - Obama and Arafat to name a couple
