What utter nonsense. Again.

Let me guess, straight from the same tabloid rags that headline "Obama, ETs and UFOs" being in cohoorts... :doh:

Fact check.

UN housing expert makes
first visit to the US

xxxxxxxxxx
20 October 2009

GENEVA -- The Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Ms. Raquel Rolnik, will visit the United States of America from 22 October to 8 November 2009 at the invitation of the Government.

"I will collect first-hand information on the status of realization of the right to adequate housing in the US, with particular emphasis on social housing, the foreclosure crisis and homelessness," said Ms Rolnik. "The United States has been implementing a variety of programs and policies towards providing adequate housing for everyone. I want to look at their functioning and impact from a human rights perspective."

The Special Rapporteur will hold meetings with senior Government officials including at the Department of State and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She will also meet NGO representatives.

Ms Rolnik will visit Washington DC, New York, Wilkes-Barre, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference on Sunday 8 November 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at a centre for homeless people in Washington DC (the Center for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV), 425 2nd St NW). A report on the visit will be submitted to the Human Rights Council in 2010.

Ms. Rolnik's previous visits have included The Maledives, Canada, South Africa, Spain, and Australia.

The general objectives of these country visits are:

a) to examine and report on the status of the realization of housing rights in the country, with particular attention to aspects of gender equality and non-discrimination and the protection of the poor, the vulnerable and minorities;

(b) to engage in dialogues with the Government, United Nations and intergovernmental agencies and civil society in their efforts to secure these rights;

(c) to identify practical solutions and best practices in the realization of rights relevant to the mandate;

(d) to follow up on relevant concluding observations made by treaty bodies and other international bodies and assess their impacts on policies adopted by the countries concerned.

Furthermore, depending on the particular country context, the mission may have a specific thematic focus on priority issues that the Special Rapporteur has identified.

In other words, the Special Rapporteur is there to help U.N. member states to excel.

Oh the horror the horror! :swoon:

AI is in every country and does numerous reports; including North American countries.

And in fairness, the US was the fourth highest executer of people last year, behind such bastions of human rights as China, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

This seems reasonable, given that the US has extensive history of human rights abuses within its borders.

Except Ms. Rolnik's mandate and purpose of the visit is not to address the "US human rights abuses within its borders." The U.N. has "launched" no such investigation: the OP headline is pure rubbish. As a Special Rapporteur, Ms. Rolnik travels around and making country visits is business as usual.

Ms. Rolnik's task is to assess adequate housing, in which capacity she will try to identify practical solutions and best practices and engage in dialogues with the Government, United Nations and inter governmental agencies and civil society in order to help their efforts to secure adeguate housing for all citizens.

In other words, she offers her expertice to U.N. member states so that the member states can excel.

And pay attention, please: [Ms. Rolnik] will visit the United States of America from 22 October to 8 November 2009 at the invitation of the Government.

Obviously, with the current economy and families losing first their jobs, then their homes, the USG felt they could use all the help available, you know, as in "...with particular emphasis on social housing, the foreclosure crisis and homelessness."

Once again it is just the usual suspects using hyper spin to create a manufactured and totally artificial "outrage," trusting the usual lemmings as usual not to check & verify the story.

Kalevalatar: thank you for providing a more reliable source then "realnewsblog".

The title of the RNB story would irritate and incite many people, when the world has alot worse countries to investigate, we are not perfect but we are far from the worst.

The visit in your link seems like a routine visit to show the world how their nation compares to the other nations on the good, rather then the bad.

If it sounds outrageous, and its not a mainstream media outlet, find another source and see if the facts are not correct. Even if its a MSM, you might want to get a couple points of view.(remember stories are shared, so check to see which news ource its from. If you read a story from APi in CNN, it is the same story written by Api in USatoday.)

Whats your point exotic? You think that the america is at the very top priority concerning a human rights issue? Compare us to China and other countries sir. We have more human rights than most of the world. Do you not know this? Its not a matter of being defensive-but reality. If my country human rights was like China-this would make sense. Again, its a matter of priority!

ArnautDaniel-What human rights abuses? Protecting our borders against illegal immigrants? Which is abiding by the law. How is this an abuse??

We have more human rights than most of the world.

I resent such a statement that highlights American arrogance. You have no universal healthcare for all citizens, you prohibit the civil unions of homosexuals, you prohibit homosexuals from joining the military, you discriminate against African Americans in all aspects of society (having a black President does not make America unracist), you execute hundreds of criminals and yet you claim to have better human rights than countries such as Britain? Rubbish, methinks...

We have the best health care in the world. That's why people come here from all over the world for surgeries.
We do not prohibit civil unions.
There are many gays in the military.
Some people discriminate against some groups - just like your country.
We only execute those who deserve it.
Your post.......rubbish methinks.

Having the best healthcare is not the same as having universal healthcare. I firmly believe healthcare to be a basic right.
Sorry, I meant marriage.
There are gays in the military, but if their sexuality were to be discovered under the laughable don't ask don't tell, they'd be chucked out of it.
Yes, but in our countries, we don't have the KKK and a little thing called the 'Deep South'.
Who is anybody to decide whether another person dies? It is not our right as human beings. Murder is murder, whether it's legally endorsed or not, and any nation that practises murder on its own people clearly needs to re evaluate its human rights.

So EVERY Chinese person deserves human rights being upheld but NOT every American?

Canada routinely gets thrashed by AI.

Why is it some of y'all just cannot take any criticism of the US?
