In today's USA Republican environment I would think that Jim Jordon would get heaps of Republican support.
1. He is incendiary, polarising and always ready to troll the "libs"
2. He is willing to go full steam ahead into conspiracies and attack institutions, such as Science.
3. He is a Trump lackey, always giving Trump 100% loyal support and never ever saying anything that Trump wouldn't approve of.
4. No line is beyond him, he will cross all lines to win political favour with the MAGA faithful, including declaring a stolen election and supporting schemes to throw out millions of legal votes so that his guy "wins". He will also fight against masks and vaccines to earn political points even it means 100's of thousands of Republican supporters will ultimately die unnecessarily in the midst of a deadly global pandemic.
5. He knows when to keep quiet, he knows not to speak up against those who are above him in the food chain and who can support him in his ambitions towards personal power and wealth. The ultimate loyalist.

The 25th Amendment if he is declared unfit for office. The insurance tables from social security show an 83 year old in the USA has an 8% chance of death so statistically, with all the stress it is possible. Is a 25th Amendment removal in Joe Biden’s future?
People, ultimately are mortal. That's why typically countries have backups for Vice President or Vice Prime minister.
Although, there is no particular special reason to think Biden won't be around. The MAGA faithful were fulling up this forum in the lead up to the 2020 election saying that Biden (if he won) would soon after, leave office and hand it to Kamala Harris, and yet here we are with Biden looking to run for a second term.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said he’ll “support anyone who can get to 217 votes” and that Republicans have to come “together as a conference.”

Allow me to be the first to congratulate Speaker { }

The GOP is in a closed door meeting to try to hash things out today.

House GOP rejects proposal to raise vote threshold to nominate speaker

The effort to change the rules was aimed at avoiding a protracted floor fight like the one in January when it took 15 rounds of voting for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy to win the gavel.

House GOP is voting now on Reps. Scalise and Jordan for speaker nominee

One member, Colorado Rep. Ken Buck, told CNN he voted “present” since neither man would answer his question yesterday about whether the 2020 election was stolen.

GOP Rep. Max Miller says he won't be voting for Scalise on the floor

If Jim Jordan is also a no [see edit below], it doesn't take too many more to ensure this will take another ballot. We may look back at McCarthy's elevation as a fast-track in comparison to this one.

Gaetz says he's on board with Scalise.

The vote was 113 Scalise 99 Jordan

ETA:

[Jordan is telling people to vote for Scalise.]

More than a half-dozen Republicans said Wednesday they would vote for Jordan on the floor, while several others said they remained undecided on how they would vote, prompting Scalise to delay any floor action on the speakership.

Reps. Max Miller of Ohio, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Lauren Boebert of Colorado all said they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie tweeted shortly after the conference vote that he had told Scalise in person that “he doesn’t have my vote on the floor, because he has not articulated a viable plan for avoiding an omnibus.”

Meanwhile, Florida Rep. Carlos Gimenez [said he'd vote for] Kevin McCarthy

--

I guess instead of the embarrassment of multiple rounds of voting, we'll have the embarrassment of the House being unable to do anything at all.

Who am I kidding? We may easily get both kinds of embarrassment before there's a new Speaker.

Scalise faces a key math problem as he struggles to collect 217 votes for speaker

At least 12 GOP lawmakers have said publicly they’ll oppose Scalise’s nomination and more have expressed frustration or skepticism about his leadership, more than enough to sink his bid.

Scalise is facing broad skepticism inside the far-right House Freedom Caucus, a key bloc of Republicans who mostly supported the Trump-backed Jordan for speaker, multiple sources told CNN, citing a general lack of trust with Republican leadership.

House GOP members are gathering again Thursday afternoon behind closed doors, to try to hash out a way forward.

Scalise’s individual outreach did peel off at least one holdout. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who initially said Wednesday that she would vote for Jordan on the floor, met with Scalise and said afterward she felt “comfortable” enough to support his speaker nomination.

“If Scalise were not to make it, the next person got less votes,” Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida said of Jordan. “And by the way, I think, more controversial. So that would not be a good thing for this place.”

SCALISE WITHDRAWS
The Louisiana Republican, who serves as the House majority leader, announced at a conference meeting Thursday evening that he was pulling out of the battle to become speaker.

(sounds as though the non-foaming at the mouth contingent are looking for an alternative to Jordan, who will also face a math problem. Like one of those really hard word problems.)

-

But the opposition to Scalise as the next speaker only grew Thursday, with roughly 20 Republicans publicly opposing him.

The deadlock is leading to intensifying frustration as the House GOP looks no closer to coalescing around a speaker candidate. Several Republicans described Thursday’s meeting as a venting session that wasn’t terribly productive. Many said it didn’t feel like anyone could actually get to the 217 votes needed.

“This is petty, and I’m getting freaking tired of it,” said Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a New York Republican.

--

Separately, some House Democrats have started having preliminary conversations with some Republicans about who would be interested in working with them if Scalise drops out, one source familiar with the conversations told CNN.

One of the Republicans Democrats would be interested in is House Rules Chairman Tom Cole of Oklahoma, the source added.

Could be a problem when you have the MAGA extreme contingent voting against anyone that isn't a Trump sycophant, isn't a troll of Liberals.
And the majority of Republicans (non MAGA extreme) voting against anyone that is simply an attention seeking, disruptive troll.
Then you have the Democrats who of course will vote against any Trump sycophant troll of Liberals.

The same inviduals that will oppose anyone except their choice. A conference can't function with such people.
I think the only way out is to find a candidate that a few Democrats would support.

I wonder if the Democrats might be able to peel off some people from the Problem Solvers Caucus, make them live up to their name.
I suspect that may be the only way a Speaker gets elected; some Republicans seem to have no interest in voting for a Speaker that "RINOs" (at least they think some moderate Republicans are RINOs) could support.

Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.) has filed to run against House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for Speaker.

-

Scott, an ally of ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, told CNN he decided to run because “we have to do the right thing the right way. That’s something that we as a conference are not doing right now.”

The seven-term representative told CNN’s Manu Raju on Thursday that the GOP’s inability to elect a new speaker “makes us look like a bunch of idiots.”

“We’ve got a very small group of people that they have to have everything their way. We had a group that sabotaged Speaker McCarthy and now we’ve had a group that sabotaged Steve Scalise, both of them great people,” he said.
