The Tailbone Miracle

The tailbone, the last bone at the end of the backbone is the part of the human body that is never lost. It does not even decompose completely in the ground.

In several Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is reported, that the tailbone is the origin of the human being. And on Judgment Day God will emerge a human being from his or her tailbone.

The holy scripts are:

1) Abu Huraira narrated, that the Prophet (pbuh) said:

"All of the Sons of Adam (men) will decay except for the bone of coccyx (tailbone). From it he (man) was created and by it he will be reconstructed."

2) Abu Huraira narrated, that the Prophet (pbuh) said:

"There is nothing of the human body that does not decay except one bone; that is the little bone at the end of the coccyx of which the human body will be recreated on the Day of Resurrection."

Handed down by Al-Bukhari, Al Nassii, Abu Daoud, Ibn Majah and Ahmad in his book Al Mousnad and Malek in his book Al Mouattaa. In those Hadith are some unambiguous statements and facts:

- Man is created from the tailbone
- The tailbone will not decompose
- On Judgment Day the resurrection will be from the tailbone

Let us consider the scientific findings which confirm these statements.

- II - Scientific facts

1/ States of embryonic development

When a sperm enters an egg cell the development of the embryo starts. The ovule starts to divide: One cell becomes two, two become four, etc. Cell division and growth continue and the "embryonic disc" is formed, which consists of two layers:

1) The outer epiblast:

It contains the cytotrophoblast, which fixes the embryo at the uterus wall, so that the embryo can receive nutrition out of the mother`s blood.

2) The inner hypoblast

From this the embryo is formed by the power of Allah, the Almighty God. On the 15th day a first string is becoming visible, the so-called primitive streak. This string has a sharp end. And the first knot, called primitive node.

The side on which the primitive streak appears is known as the back of the embryonic disc. From primitive streak and primitive node all organs and tissue are formed as follows:

- The ectoderm forming skin and central nervous system

- The mesoderm forming soft muscles in the intestinal tract, the heart, the blood circulation, the bones, the sexual organs and uretic system, deeper tissue, lymph system and the milt.

- The endoderm forming stomach mucous membrane, respiratory system, organs of the intestinal tract, bladder, thyroid and the auditory canal.

Finally the primitive streak and node are torn away and form the tailbone. Conclusion: the tailbone contains the primitive streak and node and those are able to grow and can form three layers, from which the fetus is formed:

Ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm.

An indication of the importance of the primitive streak in the embryonic development is that the British committee WARNEK (responsible for human fertilization and genetics) prohibits scientists to conduct experiments on fertilized embryos in which the primitive streak has already been formed.

2/ Fetal abnormity as a proof that the tailbone contains the mother cells for a human being

After forming and shaping of the fetus from the primitive streak and primitive node, which lie in the last vertebra of the tailbone, primitive streak and node keep their characteristics. In case of mutation of one of them a tumor (teratoma) would form in addition to the fetus, which represents an abnormal fetus with some fully shaped organs. That way a surgeon can find some complete organs, which can be any organ, when opening the tumor… teeth, hair, even hand or feet with nails (pictures exist although we will not present them). People learned by this that the tailbone really contains mother cells.

Hans Spemann experiments

Scientists found out that the cell formation and organization of the fetus is initiated by the primitive streak and primitive node. Before these parts form no differentiation of cells can take place. One of the most popular scientists, who proved this, was the German scientist Hans Spemann.

By his experiments with the primitive streak and the primitive node he found out that they organize the development of the embryo and called them for this reason "the primary organizer".

The German scientist started his experiments with amphibians by inserting a primary organizer he had cut out from one embryo under the epiblast of another embryo of the same age (first embryonic stage third or fourth week).

This led to the formation of a second embryo from the implanted part, which has been inserted into a new environment. The implanted part had influence on the surrounding cells of the new environment. That way a second embryo is formed in the first embryo.

3/ Tailbone cells can not be degraded or destroyed

In 1931 Spemann ground the primary organizer and implanted it again. The grinding did not change the results of the experiment; the second embryo was formed anyhow. In 1933 Spemann and his scientists repeated the same experiment but this time they boiled the primary organizer before. But despite boiling a second embryo was formed. It was shown that the cells could not be influenced. In 1935 Spemann got the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the primary organizer.

Dr. Othman Al Djilani and Sheik Abd Majid Azzandani did some experiments on the tailbone in 2003/Ramadan1424 in the Sheik Abd Majid Azzanidanis house in Sana'a (Yemen). One of the two vertebras of the five tailbones was burned on a gas flame for 10 minutes until they were burned completely. (They had glowed red and then turned black).

They put the burned pieces into sterile boxes and brought them to a analysis laboratory in Sana'a (Al Olaki Laborytory) Dr. Saleh al Olaki, Professor for histology and pathology of the university of Sana'a analyzed the pieces and found out that the cells of the bone tissue of the tailbone ware not affected and had survived the flames (only muscles, fat and bone marrow were burned, while the cells of the tailbone were not affected).

- III - Aspects of miracle

1. The prophet's tradition about the tailbone belongs to the scientific miracles of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), because embryology found out that all parts of the body and the organs of a human being derive from the tailbone, which is known as the primary organizer.

This primary organizer makes cells part and grow and leads to the formation of tissue for differentiation, which leads to the formation of the nervous system in its primary form. From this part, from which a human being is formed as an embryo, he is formed in the hereafter as well.

2. Grinding or boiling the primary organizer had no effect on the experiments. The second embryo formed anyhow in each case. It was shown that the cells of the tailbones bone tissue were not affected and survived the heat even after burning. This is as well a proof for the hadith of the prophet that the tailbone will not decompose completely or disappear.

PART ONE

Salaam Alaikum, Sunrise. Thank you for pasting this article. The site claims that although the coccyx bone may be grinded down or burnt, its cells were not affected.

While this is interesting, it is not what Muhammad taught.

These are Muhammad's words, as narrated by Abu Huraira.
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as say- ing: The earth would consume every son of Adam except his spinal chord from which his body would be reconstituted (on the Day of Resurrection).
Abu Huraira reported so many ahadith from Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and amongst these one was this that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: There is a bone in the human being which the earth would never consume and it is from this that new bodies would be reconstituted (on the Day of Resurrection). They said: Allah's Messenger, which bone is that? Thereupon he said: It is the spinal bone.

Hadith (Hadis) Books (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu-Dawud, and Malik's Muwatta)
In the Free Medical Dictionary, a bone is defined as:
1. the hard, rigid form of connective tissue constituting most of the skeleton of vertebrates, composed chiefly of calcium salts.
2. any distinct piece of the skeleton of the body.

bone - definition of bone in the Medical dictionary - by the Free Online Medical Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

The coccyx is defined as:

coccyx /coc·cyx/ (kok´siks) tail bone; the small bone caudal to the sacrum, formed by union of three to five rudimentary vertebrae, and forming the caudal extremity of the vertebral column.

coccyx - definition of coccyx in the Medical dictionary - by the Free Online Medical Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

To state that Muhammad meant "cells" when he clearly said "bone" and even described which one, to me, is an attempt to change his words.

Also, cremating a body destroys all living material, which would include cells.

When a cremation is properly performed, the heat is extreme to the extent that no living material exposed to the heat can survive it.
DNA Test after Death

The scientists in the article did not place a coccyx into a cremation chamber, had they done so, there would have been nothing living left.

PART TWO

Of course, as we already saw, Muhammad was talking about the bone, not about its cells. We do know that the earth does decay human bodies completely. I posted some examples in the original thread, I will post them here also.

We know that in the sea, whale skeletons are eaten by worms, who dissolve them using acids.

The wispy worms may significantly speed up the whales’ decomposition, Katz said. Researchers previously thought it took decades for a skeleton to break down in the ocean, she said, but the worms consume it in less than a decade.

STUDY: BONE WORMS USE ACID TO DISSOLVE WHALE SKELETONS | UTSanDiego.com

Obviously, if this happens to a whale skeleton at sea, it also happens to human skeletons. The sons of Adam who drowned in the sea will not have spinal chords left from which their bodies will be reconstituted.

If we want to examine bodies that are buried in the earth, we will also see that often, the whole skeleton, not only the spinal chord, is eaten away.

The ship at Sutton Hoo is believed to have contained a body of a king, who was buried sometime in the Middle Ages. There was left nothing of either his body or skeleton, because the acidic acid dissolved all of it.
British Museum - Who was buried at Sutton Hoo?

No trace of a body was found during the 1939 excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial.
Analyses of soil samples for residual phosphate (a chemical left behind when a human or animal body has completely decayed away), taken in 1967 during the British Museum's excavations, support the idea that a body was originally placed in the burial chamber, but that this had totally decayed in the highly acidic conditions at the bottom of the ship.
British Museum - Who was buried at Sutton Hoo?

In 2011, the remains of a young boy who died on the Titanic and was subsequently buried, were exhumed so he could be recognized. He was initially incorrectly identified as being Finnish. No spinal chord remained, but instead there was a fragment of an armbone, and teeth.

Following exhumation of the grave in 2001, which produced in a 2.4-inch-long fragment of an arm bone and three teeth, Parr and colleagues concluded that the child was Eino Viljami Panula, a 13-month-old Finnish infant who drowned with his parents in the disaster.
Titanic's 'Unknown Child' Identified : Discovery News

In Germany and some other parts of Western Europe, archaeologists find bodies that were buried in the peat bogs. Often they were of people who were drowned or executed there in other ways, hundreds of years before Christ. The soil in the bogs has acid concentration which interestingly dissolves the bones, but leaves the rest of the body intact.

Mummification in Bogs

The word mummification usually conjures an image of an ancient Egyptian that has been wrapped in gauze and preserved for thousands of years. However there is a process whereby the forces of nature cause natural mummification. This natural mummification can occurs in several climates. One of these climates is the peat bog; most peat bogs suitable for providing the proper conditions for mummification can be found in Europe. Mummification occurs because of the conditions produced by the bog. Sphagnum moss is the primary component of any peat bog; sphagnum moss grows upwards and completely encases bodies within the bog. When this sphagnum dies it condenses and forms peat, which encases the bodies in a cold, acidic, and oxygen deprived environment. The bacteria and fungi that are responsible for decomposition cannot survive without oxygen, thus the body cannot break down. However the aforementioned acidic conditions have an effect on the preserved bodies. These acidic conditions break down the bones within the bodies while leaving the skin intact. This is why bog mummies have a different appearance than their skin and bones Egyptian counterparts. The skin of a bog mummy is tanned and leather, and due to the absence of bones a bog mummy can be compared to a sack of skin.
http://www.zoology.ubc.ca/bio1/BogWeb/StuRep03/Mummy_Coelho.htm

Most of the bodies found in the bogs had skin remaining on them but the bones were eaten away... in some cases, nothing of the bones remained.

Damendorf Man died about 300 B.C. and was discovered thousands of years later in the Eckernförde district of Germany. Unlike some bog bodies, he was flattened by the weight of the peat. Only his skin, nails, and hair (as well as his leather belt and shoes) were preserved.
As P. V. Glob wrote in The Bog People, "The rest of him has completely disappeared as if by magic. A split nearly an inch long in the region of the heart may indicate how he was killed."
http://www.mummytombs.com/bog/damendorf.htm

Although the cocyxx is a strong bone, it also eventually gets decayed in the earth, and disappears. Sometimes this happens to it after it happens to other bones, other times before.

Clearly, Muhammad's claim that the earth dissolves everything of the human body and leaves only the spinal bone is not true.

God obviously did not tell him this, because God would have known that the earth can and does eventually decay human remains, including bones.

Muhammad was a smart man and he did many good things. However, he was not a prophet of God.

Prophet Muhammad was illiterate with no knowledge of any kind of science

suit yourself if you do not agree with the article

Iam not an expert to discuss it
Afwan, Sunrise.

I am not an expert either and I have no background in science or human anatomy, other than high school which I finished eons ago.

With a quick bit of research on the internet (using reliable sources, which are linked to), I was able to demonstrate that the coccyx bone does indeed decay, despite of what Muhammad said.

The site's authors tried to change the word "bone" to "cells", which is a dishonest and false rendering of Muhammad's words. Even if cells were being referred to, the hadith would still be false, because during cremation all living things- including cells- are destroyed.

Muhammad taught some things that were blatantly false. He was only a man in the 7th century, so I do not blame him for this. However, he was not receiving his teachings from God. God does not make mistakes.

with my humble knowledge : aren't bones also made of cells?
Everything is made up of cells. But a bone and a cell are two different things.

bone (bōn) 1. the hard, rigid form of connective tissue constituting most of the skeleton of vertebrates, composed chiefly of calcium salts.
2. any distinct piece of the skeleton of the body.

bone - definition of bone in the Medical dictionary - by the Free Online Medical Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

cell (sel) 1. any of the protoplasmic masses making up organized tissue, consisting of a nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm enclosed in a cell or plasma membrane. It is the fundamental, structural, and functional unit of living organisms. In some of the lower forms of life, such as bacteria, a morphological nucleus is absent, although nucleoproteins (and genes) are present.
2. a small, more or less closed space.

cell - definition of cell in the Medical dictionary - by the Free Online Medical Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

Muhammad did not say that the coccyx cell will not be "consumed by the earth", he said this of the coccyx bone.

Even if he said this of the cell, that would still be wrong because as I have demonstrated, cremation of a body destroys all life, including its cells.

why would prophet Muhammad say a thing he knew nothing about before his prophethood?
Before his prophethood? Are you saying he was talking about God will raise our bodies before he became a prophet? Did he know God before he became a prophet?

God cannot have revealed to Muhammad that the coccyx is the only bone that does not get consumed by the earth. Clearly, as I have demonstrated, it does. Someone was giving Muhammad wrong information.

The notion of a resurrection bone is a Jewish one. The Jews called it luz. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia it is the "Aramaic name for the os coccyx, the "nut" of the spinal column. The belief was that, being indestructible, it will form the nucleus for the resurrection of the body. The Talmud narrates that the emperor Hadrian, when told by R. Joshua that the revival of the body at the resurrection will take its start with the "almond," or the "nut," of the spinal column, had investigations made and found that water could not soften, nor fire burn, nor the pestle and mortar crush it (Lev. R. xviii.; Eccl. R. xii.). The legend of the "resurrection bone," connected with Ps. xxxiv. 21 (A. V. 20: "unum ex illis [ossibus] non confringetur") and identified with the cauda equina (see Eisenmenger, "Entdecktes Judenthum," ii. 931-933), was accepted as an axiomatic truth by the Christian and Mohammedan theologians and anatomists, and in the Middle Ages the bone received the name "Juden Knöchlein" (Jew-bone; see Hyrtl, "Das Arabische und Hebräische in der Anatomie," 1879, pp. 165-168; comp. p. 24). Averroes accepted the legend as true (see his "Religion und Philosophie," transl. by Müller, 1875, p. 117; see also Steinschneider, "Polemische Literatur," 1877, pp. 315, 421; idem, "Hebr. Bibl." xxi. 98; idem, "Hebr. Uebers." p. 319; Löw, "Aramäische Pflanzennamen," 1881, p. 320). Possibly the legend owes its origin to the Egyptian rite of burying "the spinal column of Osiris" in the holy city of Busiris, at the close of the days of mourning for Osiris, after which his resurrection was celebrated (Brugsch, "Religion und Mythologie," 1888, pp. 618, 634)."
