To help themselves the best that they are able?

I agree with that to a point but it sounds too much like something Ayn Rand would say. Even those with little material wealth can give back to society in ways that do not involve anything financial. After all, from those to which much is given much should be expected.

Throughout history they've always made up the bult of any military for once. The rich got things because the poor protect them when needed. No different today. Sure there are "rich kids" in the military but lets face it most "grunts" dont exactly have summerhomes in the hamptons.

Define contribute

The dictionary defines as:
b : to play a significant part in bringing about an end or result <many players have contributed to the team's success>

Looking for others to decide if people should contribute and in which ways.

(Trying to get us all to think critically)

The poor often hold jobs, important jobs, that others consider "beneath them" -- both the activity and the income.

I recently heard an interview with the founder of Habitat for Humanity, who noted that those who are poor, who must struggle daily, acquire a wisdom and depth he does not see among those who have had it 'easier'.

It takes a great deal of ingenuity and energy to survive in difficult circumstances.

"Whatever you did for one of the least of these ..." Matthew 25

You spawned a thought...

There are different types do poor people.

Consider the entrepreneur who at time may have millions and at other times millions in dept. Others may meet the definition of poor, but do not collect any supplement from society. Then there are those that are physically unable to earn a wage and need our help. Yet others that are able bodied people who choose not to contribute and collect from society. Last are the folks that collect a full wage from society and they work "under the table" collecting a second wage.

Way are able bodied people allowed not to contribute?

These people are the antithesis of the American spirit.

I would find it helpful if you would define "contribute" -- this post seems to indicate that "contribute" = money. Is that correct ?

By definition poor do not have money. We have some ascribed a fallacy that they then cannot contribute. This is not true.

As humans we can contribute to an effort with time, talent, and money.

Why is it that just because you do not have money we do not require you to contribute your talent or time?

Many poor people contribute these things.

Do you know, regularly interact, with many "poor people" ?
