Given the multitude of Christian denominations that have sprung up over the last 500 years, there seem to have been few, if any, important divisions among Christians about the authenticity of the canon of the New Testament since the Catholic Church promulgated it at the Council of Rome more than 1,600 years ago.

I. The Genesis of this Topic

St. John Henry Newman, the great 19th century English churchman, scholar and convert to Catholicism, famously once said, “To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant.”[1] That seems like a fitting way to begin because the genesis of this essay was my hearing a Catholic convert quote the New Testament passages he references when explaining to his Protestant family and friends why he became Catholic.[2] I noticed that in the dialogue he described, all parties acknowledged the authoritativeness of the Bible as the inspired Word of God. Given this common ground, it occurred to me that the more fundamental questions at issue were: 1) Where did the Bible itself come from? 2) How was it put together? And 3) who decided which books made it into the original group that came to be known as the canon of the Christian Bible?

God.

Psalm 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
1. The Jews. [well until 95 AD they ripping out some and some of which was Hanukkah only because Wisdom 2 ;) beat their butts - who refused Jesus as their Savior]
2. St Augustine, St Jerome [the guy translating the Bible to Latin] and the Pope discussed it, the Pope declared it.

So I agree, God. Because Jesus said 'You're My steward with the keys and so what ya say goes....' aka Jesus Who is God works through His rock... aka Steward see Isaiah 22

I'm glad you agree He utilized His steward He had on earth to do all the work.

I only agree with the part I posted.

The Bible was written in Heaven before It was written on Earth.

Later, when tares were sown into It, God superintended their removal.

Look at it this way:

Suppose you were in a room full of one dollar bills, two dollar bills, three dollar bills, etc; all the way up to ten dollar bills.

And you were told to separate the legal tender from the illegal tender.

Could you do it?

Sure you could.

Just put the one, two, five, and ten dollar bills in one pile, and all the others in another.

Easy peasy.

So you are under the impression Jesus abandoned us after He rose?

Or did He not assign keys [in Jewish culture a sign of authority of the King] to His steward.
Did He not say His Church/His bride?
OR giving them the power to loose or hold bound?

So basically, it would appear you believe in Heaven someone wrote out the laws and just dropped it down hoping someone would find it all, understand it [but then Peter said damnation happens if you twist any of it] and twist it to how they 'feel'..?

AND the earliest writings INCLUDE a list of men who 'were on the Chair of Peter' but now, if it doesn't agree to the twists... then history doesn't count.

Of course this is all rhetorical since you cannot debate in here in OBOB.

But some points to consider.

Cool.

Don't forget the points... and if you want to argue them amongst yourself at least look up history.

BTW - look up gnostics.
And the earliest heresies and early fathers writings....

SO ya see the writings HAD to be discerned and the charism of the Pope aka Steward was to know the true writings et al.

Being it was the POPE who declared it was to be believed and so forth, all Protestants who mimic his words also accept his earthly keys authority of what was 'canon' ...

O the history and so much you do not know.
