No, no, no, no and more no's.
Europe as a whole is a politically, economically, and socially festering pit, and we should distance ourselves from it. Sod the free market, it only makes the country's life more difficult anyway.
Cynical, me? No! :p

I agree it is just money. If it's good for England get the euro, if it's not keep the pound.

It won't be long before there's no such thing as money!! It'll all be done by card.

heh i agree sort of, would they keep the pound in electronic form though?

Another question: What if the pound became very weak and would likely never make a comeback, would we ditch it and go to another currency or wopuld British pride get in the way?

If that happened, do you think any other currency would have us?

I voted to keep the pound. It's not that I am particularly attached to the pound from a tradiotional point of view (the patterning of the bank notes is not too important) it has more to do with the value and trust associated with the currency.

I was all for the Euro as I am a dedicated European and want to see closer ties with our Continental friends, but a change of currency will result in a change of politics, tax laws, Vat rates, universal interest rates etc... and we aren't ready for it yet.

Politically, Europe (in general terms) is just left of centre, whilst Britain is just right of centre (not referring to political parties but to political values held by the nations). These values haven't really changed over the last fifty years or even earlier, just some small shifts.

From the Christian point of view, I believe (and you don't have to agree with me), that this country has been blessed by God because of its stance in the establishing the state of Israel (Queen Victoria and Disraeli being the main architects). At that time Britain had an empire "upon which the sun never set". In 1923 (I think), when the land set aside for the new state of Israel was passed into British hands as a protectorate, Curchill signed away 75% of the land and called it Trans-Jordan (what is now mainly Jordan). Since then, the British empire has disappeared and Britain has lost the Glory of God it once had (but the good news is that God hasn't finished with us yet... - I believe that revival for Europe will begin in this nation and already has).

The problem that I currently have with the political block known as The Europen Union, is that it is firmly opposed to Israel and a supporter of Palestine. I believe this to be an error, and I would not want to see our nation tied into such political polices, which would be inevitable if we were to embark on a commom currency.....

I think we should. Euro is the future. Everyone else has it. Ireland has it.

.
....and as I understand it some countries are now regretting their decision to change to the Euro - Germany is an example.

No, we should absolutely not lose any more of our identity by going over to the Euro.

How would you lose idenity changing to the euro. The queens head would even still be on the reverse side of the coins!

How is Germany regretting it?

I voted "yes", but would rather have had more options - I don't think the economic climate is right for a change yet, but it should happen when the economic time is right.

Whilst I'm entirely happy with people who have economic objections to a changeover, I'm frustrated and annoyed by people who want to keep the pound due to kneejerk ideas of "identity", "national pride", "heritage" or the like. This should be a purely economic decision unfettered by reactionary nationalism.

agree. Trouble is, the economic data seems to be able to be twisted to suit both yes and no arguments.

Absolutely, and I'll also be the first to admit that I don't know enough about economics to be able always to tell which bits are bogus. Mind you, I know enough about statistics to be able to spot when they've been misapplied.

As a socialist I am opposed to the Euro, because I feel it would make the UK more vulnerable to "invasion" by multinational corporations. If the Bank of England loses control of interest rates, which is what would happen if we were to take up the Euro, one of the only ways to cope with a local recession would be to invite more foreign corporations to set up shop here. They would probably only do that with significant incentives, such as lower corporation taxes and deregulation. I am opposed to both of these ideas, so by extension I also oppose the Euro.
