The Pocket Testament League has pocket -sized Gospel's of John that can be handled out. I still have about a half dozen of them myself. I keep them at work, in my car, jacket in case I have conversations with a unbeliever, I can give them one.
Keep a highlighter in your pocket. You can explain and highlight things then give them the book to keep. This helps people to see that the paper itself not important, but the message is.

I still have the Gideon New Testament that we were given in High School. They distributed them at the end of Assembly one week as we were going out. Kids could refuse to take one if they didn't want one. I think a few initially refused then went back and took one. The Gideon NT's had passages to look up for various spiritual or emotional problems, which was useful (the two Bibles I got in Sunday School, had no Scripture helps!). We just got a basic NT, but some editions have the NT, with Psalms and Proverbs.
