I kind of know what hermeneutics is but not really, and I was going to get a book about hermeneutics (or how to do it or whatever) today, and then I wondered, do you have to know greek and hebrew and those languages. I know it would be beneficail and helpful, but is it essential?

Thanks.

It is helpful, but not essential. The only thing you really need to know is the Greek alphabet, to help you look up things in the lexicons. One of the steps of any good hermeneutics procedure is going to be a lexical study with lexicons, grammars or analytical lexicons or wordbooks.
