LONDON (AFP) - Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real.

Truly scary.

I can understand people not knowing the kings and mistaking that Robin Hood was real or not, but these kids grandparents heard him speak. Its not distant history.

I remember in middle school tutoring a girl on history. We were discussing the civil war to be exact.

At one point she stops me, looks me straight in the eye and asks, "Wait a minute, do you mean to say these things really happened?"

Maybe she thought Dan Brown wrote it?? Sorry. Just kidding. Frankly, I'm not surprised. When my son was in high school about four years ago, his history teacher asked the class to name a patriot from the Revolutionary War, and one of the guys said "Mel Gibson."

In Jay Leno's monologue last night, he cited a survey that found 7 of 10 high school students couldn't find Canada on a map. His double joke: The other three couldn't find the map. And that if the draft were reinstated, he allowed as how they'd figure out where Canada is.

Good one. I remember when six of our embassy personnel who were caught outside the US compound in Tehran when the hostages were taken, Canada took them and then smuggled them out of the country. In Detroit, somebody put a big billboard up facing Windsor, Ontario. It simply said "Thanks"
