Please pray for baby Leo. He has retinoblastoma, and had the affected eye removed several weeks ago. Now, there has been a very sad update from his mom:

As you might know, we have had a horrible turn of events with Leo's retinoblastoma. It was discovered on Wednesday August 1st that he has trilateral RB. This means that an independent tumour has appeared in or close to his pineal gland in his brain.

The tumour is massive, about 6 cm in diameter. It is utterly amazing that Leo has been able to function as well as he has. Up until the proceedures he had on Thursday, he was rolling, laughing and generally being a happy baby. Unfortunately though he has lost his sight in his remaining eye.

Leo had 3 proceedures on Thursday to prepare him for chemotherapy that we feel we have to try starting early next week. Generally chemo is not very effective on brain tumours however they can not operate on the tumor as it is as a result of RB and that would contaminate the area and make reoccurance highly likely. He has had an omaya reservoir place in his brain through which the chemo will be administered right into the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid- the fluid surrounding the brain) in addition to his chest.

We will have to re-evaluate the situation after the first round of chemo which is now scheduled for every 2 days out of 21 days. Also we are still awaiting results to see if his CSF is positive. If it is, then the prognosis is even worse.

We feel such a great amount of dispair as we simply can not imagine how much we would miss our little guy if he was no longer with us. The situation is obviously dire but if it was entirely without hope we would not try chemo.

We are in utter disbelief that his has happened, especially as a simple CT scan which was supposed be done 2 months ago when he was originally diagnosed (but wasn't for a number of unbelivable reasons) could have made such a huge difference. We can only wait and see what the future holds at this point though and make the most of every second we have with our Leo.

thanks so much for praying for this family and leo. please continue to lift them up.
here is a little bit of an update:

She emailed that now they are at best dealing with a blind child who might suffer hearing loss due to chemo and who might have a mental handicap. How severe they don't know. She is also terrified of causing him pain with the chemo if it does not help, but they have to try everything.

Poor dear baby! Poor lamb :(
Oh dear sweet Jesus, please be willing to heal this innocent child. Please allow the chemotherapy to have great success. Use the doctors and technology as your instrument for healing. Touch the babies eyes, as you touched the blind, and allow the cancer to vanish. Oh Lord, we know you can do it! In Jesus christs name, Amen.

Thanks guys, today's update

August 07, 2007 at 04:44 PM EDT
We had a meeting this morning with 3 doctors and had a in depth discussion about Leo's future. Unfortuanately it turns out that Leo is CSF positive, which means the cancer has spread to the fluid around his brain.

On a more positive note though, the doctors feel that there is hope. Trilateral RB is so very rare they can hardly speak from experience (they have had 1 previous case here in 600 children), however they feel that with the "Toronto Protocol" chemo that is in place here (but still considered a study), Leo might have a 30% chance of being cured. 30%!!!!!!!! Now this is for the long term, whereas they expect the likelihood for immediate success to be much higher (possibly 80-90%), but unfortuantely may not be long lasting.

Now of course we have to be cautious as again, there are very very few cases out there, but they believe their drug/chemo combo is able to make the difference. The statistics show that elsewhere the chances of survival for a trilateral RB patient is less then 2%. Because of the size of his tumour and CSF+ result the % would fall much lower, so right now we are just so relieved that there is a good chance for Leo to pull through according to the doctors at least!

Other positive news we got is that the pressure the tumour caused in the brain would be considered low. For this reason it is not likely that any permanent damage has been caused. Additionally, Leo might even recover some of his vision, as the vision loss is relatively recent. And lastly, the pituitary gland that is responsible for hormones and adrenaline production appears not to have been affected by the pressure either.

So all in all it has been a good day. We start chemo through the ommaya reservoir directly into the CSF brain fluid tomorrow and Thursday & Friday will be long days with his regular chemo.

Oh my. I will pray on this!!!

Some pointers for you to pass on:

1) Please advise the parents to consider joining the Yahoo Pediatric Brain Tumor group. There are very helpful people there who have been through most anything in this regard:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Pediatricbraintumors/

2) If these updates are just from email, encourage the parents to create a caringbridge site so they can update people from one place AND get many visitors who will be praying for them and posting encouraging guestbook entries. Go here: www.caringbridge.org
