I wonder why some people dont see the but in the text which says:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
And people say that fulfil means to do away with. How far is that from destroy? 'But' suggests that there are opposites. Fulfil must then mean the opposite of destroy. If you destroy something you break it down. The opposite of that would be to build it up. Fulfil means simply to fill full. When you have fulfilled the contruction of a house the house is now more suitable to live in than when it was partially completed. The house is not done away with when it is fulfilled. It is the same as the law. Jesus lived a perfect life in accordance to the law so that we can understand how to live by the spirit of the law and not just the mere letter of the law. Of course the letter of the law is important but when not understood or applied in the heart it is useless. Jesus fulfilled the law when he taught that if a man look upon a woman to lust has already committed adultery in his heart. Jesus fulfilled the law when he taught that a man who wished his brother dead in his heart has already committed murder. Jesus filfilled the law by adding the spirit component to the law in the minds of people, showing that the law is really kept and broken in the heart. He didnt teach all that stuff just for us to decide the law is no longer important.
