New state would have no term limits, part-time legislature:
Official Calls For Riverside, 12 Other Counties To Secede From California « CBS Los Angeles

Notice the reaction from The Powers That Be: rather than taking the guy and his concerns seriously, or asking why he and his supporters might want to take this drastic step, they resort to sarcastic comments and ridicule. It's always the same.

Got to admit, though---it's starting to sound like somebody is getting fed up with Politics As Usual, unending spending, perpetual deficit and the shenanigans of the Powers That Be...

But to do that, Brak, they'd have to encompass Arizona and New Mexico as well.

Of course, on the plus side, that would certainly ensure that the Texas Republic had a secure border.

On the south side, anyway....not sure how they'd keep out the hordes of Americans from the north wanting to escape the decaying economic system in their failing country and trying to get into Texas. ;)

I wouldn't mind a bit of changes to the lines in the sand.

It's not the first time someone has suggested splitting California up (along with countless other secession movements across the U.S.A.). And it makes sense to do so. But finding the political will to get something like that done is nearly impossible these days.

That really did shock me. The quote from the governor's representative was especially immature and sounded bluntly uneducated. If the central government of a state is not representative of the people in a large geographic part of that state, secession is an entirely reasonable idea.

It's like people think the U.S. map froze forever and ever amen with the additions of Alaska and Hawaii--which completely ignores the first nearly 200 years of our history.

You guys give this Supervisor Stone way to much credit he is just another slimy politician who decided to grand stand with a ridiculous secession plan rather then come up with a real plan to handle county's finicial short fall which would have involved cuts to county serices.

Well- this is yet another example of how this country doesn't really work as is. The federal government itself isn't capable of effectively governing- because our country is too large. States' rights are often ignored (and in some cases state law and federal law contradict each other). Personally, I think the US Senate should be abolished and we should only have a House of Representatives. Our system was never intended to become what it is now because I don't think the Founding Fathers ever imagined the country would become as large as it is. We really do need to do something to make it better. Good luck convincing all the nostalgic people out there though. They'd rather go down with a sinking ship instead of making changes for the better.

Instead of infighting in states like California- we should concentrate on making radical changes to the Federal government first- then perhaps the state issues would work themselves out. It will never happen, of course, but it is a nice dream.
