Basically Pope Francis wants to keep the same black shoes he's always had. No red shoes for him. He's told his faithful shoe maker of 40 years, Carlos, to not change a thing and they should be ready next month.

So basically, no red shoes for him. He doesn't want them.

 I wouldn't want them either.

it seems odd that the Pope is disregarding this old tradition

:(

Perhaps he has his own personal reasons for not wearing the red shoes. Maybe it's a sign of his humility - without saying anything negative about prior Popes. I'm sure if he felt called to wear red shoes in order to be humble to the Catholic Church, he would - as Christ and His earthly parents make sure He continued to follow Jewish traditions.

How old is this tradition ? Pope John Paul II always wore black shoes .
Papal shoes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
it seems this tradition goes back at least to the middle ages when the vestments of the Pope were red Pope Paul V was elected in 1566 and he changed the color of the Papal vestments to white

as for Pope John Paul II
I have seen pictures of him wearing red leather shoes
some of the shoes he had were a very dark red, sometimes called oxblood
maybe that is what you were thinking of?

Those are some nice shoes actually. They're also not that cheap if he has a shoemaker, unless he has small feet that is.

I have to get dress shoes made since I'm a size 14 with a narrow foot, and those things can cost anywhere from $250-$500 a pair.

What I find slightly odd is how much people seem to care what shoes he wears. They are shoes. I like the red shoes, but really, does it make any difference to anything ?
