My appreciation for Latin multi-voice & plainchant grew significantly over the weekend.
I had the wonderful experience of attending a concert called "Holy Week in Renaissance Rome" which included:
Allegri's Miserere
Gesualto's Tenebrae Responses
Lassus Timor et tremor and Tristis est anima mea as well as Holy Week masterpieces by Victoria and Palestrina.
Wonderful times. If any of these are ever performed in concert near you run, don't walk, to purchase a ticket. By way of background on the pieces:
For over 100 years, Allegri's Miserere was sung only in the Sistine Chapel, with the Papal Choirs secret ornaments (abbellimenti) -- until 14-year-old Mozart heard it and wrote it out from memory.
Carlo Gesualdo ruled as a Renaissance Prince, murdered his wife and her lover, and composed some of the most chromatic and passionate music ever written for Holy Week.
Lassus, Victoria and Palestrina created some of their finest music for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.
