unpardonable sin, an idea based on Mark 3:28-30. To blaspheme is to slander, defame, revile. The verses must be understood in their context: Jesus healed the sick, evil spirits recognizing him as the Son of God. Yet he was accused of being possessed by Beelzebul and casting out demons by the prince of demons (Mark 3:22). But Jesus power comes from the Holy Spirit. Those who identify the beneficent works of the Holy Spirit with Beelzebul are thus committing an unpardonable sin: they attribute Jesus power to the devil and thereby deny the saving work of God.
JohnD's note: The chaps who blasphemed in this instance should have been declaring the loudest that the Messiah Jesus is here! Rather, to avoid doing this very thing in the face of all the scriptural testimony and the miraculous evidence they made the public declaration that Jesus was a sorcerer. And thus the last straw on their account had been broken. Their testimony as the religious leaders of Israel was to declare the ministry of the Holy Spirit a lie. Thus they blasphemed the Holy Spirit.
This is also true of all unbelief in Jesus. When one dies in unbelief it is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit who testifies of Jesus.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
