can someone please help me with this verse because i dont really get it (notice the fat line).

31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

does that mean that men won't be forgiven for going against their feelings?
please light me up!

thank you,
blessings!

unpardonable sin, an idea based on Mark 3:28-30. To blaspheme is to slander, defame, revile. The verses must be understood in their context: Jesus healed the sick, evil spirits recognizing him as the Son of God. Yet he was accused of being possessed by Beelzebul and casting out demons ‘by the prince of demons’ (Mark 3:22). But Jesus’ power comes from the Holy Spirit. Those who identify the beneficent works of the Holy Spirit with Beelzebul are thus committing an unpardonable sin: they attribute Jesus’ power to the devil and thereby deny the saving work of God.

JohnD's note: The chaps who blasphemed in this instance should have been declaring the loudest that the Messiah Jesus is here! Rather, to avoid doing this very thing in the face of all the scriptural testimony and the miraculous evidence they made the public declaration that Jesus was a sorcerer. And thus the last straw on their account had been broken. Their testimony as the religious leaders of Israel was to declare the ministry of the Holy Spirit a lie. Thus they blasphemed the Holy Spirit.

This is also true of all unbelief in Jesus. When one dies in unbelief it is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit who testifies of Jesus.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

One needs to take into account the context surrounding the passage [Mt 12:31-32] Previous to this statement in these verses, Christ was talking to the pharisees. The accused him of driving out demons ("evil spirits") by the work of Satan (which does not make sense for "if satan drives out satan, he has become divided against himself..."

So the Pharisees were attributing the power behind Christ's miracles (at least the excorcism) to Satan, when actually it was by the Spirit.

Now how do we come to a solid conclusion of what v32 talks about? That is a good question:D

The sin is better explained in Luke 12:10-12.

(Luke 12:10-12) And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. {11} And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: {12} For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

Cp. Matt. 10:18-20. Mark 13:11. Luke 21:12-15.

When Satan appears as antichrist, if you know better, and do not permit God to speak through you, it is unforgiveable.

givethanks said:
when do you actually blaspheme the Spirit? please light me up! im confused really. i mean, it makes me feel scared that you will not be forgiven for life when you have cursed the Holy Spirit. does that mean that you;re "doomed"?
thanks all of you!
In our case, if one dies without Christ. That is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

The Pharisees / religious leaders of Israel were at no small historic cross roads. They should have been like John the Baptist proclaiming the Lord Jesus: this is what our faith and our nation has been all about: the Messiah, and here he is: Jesus!

Instead, they sought to protect their distinct nationality and religion and faught tooth and nail to deny Jesus the testimony they themselves should have proclaimed about him. An anti-testimony that lives on to this day, by the way. And when their last chance came, they attributed his miracles to the devil / beelzebub which they later recorded in the talmud and the toledot Yeshu as sorcery.

It was their last chance, and they sided with the devil against the Lord and his Christ. The Holy Spirit was blasphemed in that he testifies that Jesus is the Christ. And their testimony was to make the Holy Spirit out to be a liar.

Now, since man's only testimony of Christ is the acceptance of his Lordship in their lives, anyone who dies without that testimony blasphemes the Holy Spirit.
