Hello,

I thought I would start a discussion surrounding the passage of scripture John 19:28-30.

"After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the Scripture), "I thirst." A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."

What was Jesus referring to when he said, "It is finished."? Please give your reasoned explanation to support your assertion/conclusion.

God bless,

Yes...I used to believe that Jesus then went to hades and then he presented His blood to the Father and THEN the redemptive work was complete.

But recently I've seen the origins of this teaching and I've come to believe that the work was done and dusted on the cross...He still went to the abode of the dead and preached etc but the work was COMPLETE.

:)

His Blood sacrifice paid the price for sins for all who repent. He made it possible. Also validating the New Covenant and making the law of Moses obsolete, "having nailed it to the Cross". He canceled our debt.

Colossians 2:14 (NASB)
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

hi triplet,

It is finished was Jesus' telling us that the promise of God through Abraham was now complete. As I have read and studied the Scriptures I see a 'plan' that God set in motion when He called Abram of Ur. That plan was to raise up a nation of people who would honor God and do His bidding here upon the earth. The first step of that plan was to have the Scriptures written. Over the next 1500 years God had written by His Holy Spirit a complete account of who the Messiah was and sprinkled liberally throughout many, many prophecies by which we might know Him. However, in order to first prove that He was God, the written plan also contained many, many prophecies of other events so that we could be assured that the one who wrote the prophecies of the Messiah was the one true God that knew the end from the beginning.

After all of this was written down and hundreds of fulfilled prophecies were seen and understood to 'prove' that the God we find in the Scriptures is the one true and living God who loves us and cares about us. After all the prophecies fortelliing the Messiah coming to us and what he would do and how he would live - then Jesus came. The plan had all been written and proof of its authenticity provided and then the final promise to Abraham, that through his generation nations would be blessed, Jesus came and paid the ultimate price for the sins of men.

It is finished! The plan of salvation was complete. All written down and explained and then done through the blood of God's one and only Son, our Lord, Jesus.

God bless you.
IN Christ, Ted

The Catholic Bible translates the phrase "It is consummated," partly because they taught that the unbloody sacrifice of the Mass was still in effect. The word refers to a process that has been finished once and for all.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your responses. You are pretty much saying the same thing. You're saying that our redemption, our justification was completed by his death upon the cross.

Dr. Gordon Hugenberger, professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, asked the same question during a sermon he gave at his church, Lanesville Congregational Church in Gloucester, MA. He was going through the Gospel of John and he was going over Jesus’ Passion and redemptive death. When he reached John 19:28-30 he asked the question, “What is the ‘it’ that was finished?” After a moment He said, “I’m not really sure.” He followed up his question with the statement that if you think Jesus is referring to His redemption that is completed, then you have to realize that the work of redemption was not completed with His death. As Paul writes in Rom. 4:25, He was "raised for our justification." So the resurrection is every bit as important and essential for our redemption as His crucifixion. Dr. Hugenberger then replied, “I’m not sure.” He then moved on in his sermon and that was it.

So, if you would suspend judgment and consider for a moment that Dr. Hugenberger is right and Jesus is not referring to his our redemption, then what was Jesus referring to when He said, "It is finished?"

One of you made reference to the Old Testament and that is interesting, but I believe Jesus was referring to something else within the immediate context. As we move this discussion forward I would ask you to do me a favor. Today or tomorrow, back up in the Gospel of John a few chapters. The question I want you to keep in mind is, "What is the context of what's going on?" What is the context of what was going on up there on the cross? How he prepared His disciples for His agony and Passion. When is all of this taking place?

Let me know what you come up with. I would be interested to hear, but don’t just fire off a response to this. Really, back up a few chapters in John and read. Read the same story in the other gospels. What is the context of Jesus preparation, agony, passion, and death?

God bless,

I find the translation very interesting. That is actually a better translation of the word used in "it is finished." So the question could be asked, "What was consummated?"

Thanks,

Triplet, the process of redemption was consummated, once for all. There is no power in the unbloody sacrifice of the Mass, the intercession of saints, indulgences, statues, or incense.

I think you are off point. This discussion is about what Jesus was referring to when He said, "It is finished." These other topics, although interesting, must be set aside for another time. Thanks.

God bless,

I'm just tossing something out there that I am sure is way off and has nothing to do with the Statement of Jesus. "It is finished," was he referring to his suffering, being that he still had to rise from his tomb for our surety of salvation was complete.
Please I do not want to debate my wild statement, this just came upon me a moment before I wrote it. I have always believed that what Jesus was referring to was that his payment for our Sin had been finished.

I don't mind your thoughts. Even if you're wrong, you are closer to the truth, right? It also means you are thinking about it which is good. I would also ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in understanding as you read His word. It is a habit I am forming in my own life -- to pray before and after reading God's word.

Please back up and read a couple of chapters before John 19 to get a running start and dive right in. I would also read the events in the other gospels to get an understanding of the context. Do this and then we may continue. My hope is those who read this will take this as an opportunity to learn something from a provocative question.

God bless,

It is one of the many fulfillment's of Prophesy when Jesus quoted Psalm 69:21 "They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst."

You're correct, but the question is what Jesus was referring to when he said, "It is finished," not "I thirst." Jesus was not quoting any scripture when he said, "It is finished."

All the Old Testament prophesies had been fulfilled with Christs death on the cross. His work on earth was finished.

Wrong. His work could not be finished because as Paul writes in Rom. 4:25, "...he was raised for our justification." His work could not have been completed without him being raised. If he was not raised from the dead, it would have meant nothing.

Futhermore, your assertion that the "it" refers to all of the prophecies of the OT being fullfilled doesn't comport with the context of the passage. I encourage you to read the chapters before John 19 and see if you can glean what the context of the passage is.

God bless,

His ministry on earth was finished.

His work of salvation and justification continues on. It is never finished.

If Jesus' ministry was finished then why have the disciples and why recruit people like Saul (Paul) to continue his ministry. His ministry is continuing today through His church. So, I don't see how you can say his ministry was complete and that was what he was referring to. His ministry with continue until his return at the end of time.

I hope this helps. I encourage you to back up and read John 16 through 19. Do that and tell me what you think the context surround the events is. Let me know.

God bless,
