Netanyahu Orders Navy to Interdict Flotilla - Defense/Middle East - Israel News - Israel National News

Prime Minister Binyamin ordered Israel's defense establishment Monday to interdict the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla 2, Voice of Israel radio reported.

Netanahyu gave the order during a meeting of his Security Cabinet dedicated to preparations Israel was taking in advance of the new flotilla expected to set sail for Gaza this week. The Cabinet voted in favor of a Navy plan to prevent the upcoming flotilla from arriving in Gaza and granted the IDF authority to prevent the ships' arrival by any means necessary.

Earlier Monday, Israel and Egypt agreed to the arrangement whereby ships taking part in the flotilla could opt to unload cargo at El-Arish. Ships that instead try to force their way to Gaza, however, will be boarded, searched, and have their passengers arrested.

The first "freedom Flotilla" did not have the purpose of delivering humanitarian aid, it had a political pupose of isolating Israel in world opinion. Israel had offered to transfer any legitimate humanitarian cargo to Gaza after inspection, bt the flotilla organizers refused to cooperate. The same offer holds for this second flotilla; humanitarian cargo can be inspected and transferred to Gaza.

Israel has the right, and responsibility, to protect her citizens from attack by organizations dedicated to her destruction. Among those organizations is Hamas, which is the government of Gaza.

Good for Israel and Prime Minister Netanyehu for refusing to commit national suicide to please misguided and anti-semitic world opinion. Never give in to those who would see you destroyed. Make "Never Again!" mean something.

Gaza flotilla raid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flotilla motives:

Israel questioned the humanitarian motives of flotilla organizers. Israel said it had invited the organizers to use the land crossings but they were "less interested in bringing in aid than in promoting their radical agenda, playing into the hands of Hamas provocations. While they have wrapped themselves in a humanitarian cloak, they are engaging in political propaganda and not in pro-Palestinian aid."[63] Madeline Brooks, columnist for the Canada Free Press called the flotilla's aid "phony" considering that the cargo "included expired medicine and old, outdated medical equipment."[64]

According to an early IDF press release, the ship carried 75 mercenaries with links to al-Qaeda and other terror organizations, who carried $10,000 apiece on their persons,[65] The claim was never substantiated and was later withdrawn.[66] Israel has said that the group boarded separately in a different city and went on deck under different procedures. The Turkish Customs officials and the İHH denied the allegations.[67][68]

The impending arrival of the fleet was known to Israel government, military intelligence and press.[69][70] Israel said that the flotilla was violating international law, but one of the flotilla's organizers, Greta Berlin, stated that "[w]e have the right to sail from international waters into the waters of Gaza".[71] Israel informed the fleet that it would be redirected to the port of Ashdod[72] and the cargo would be transferred to Gaza after undergoing a security inspection.[73] Foreigners would be deported or, if they did not willingly agree to be deported, detained.[3]

The flotilla organisers rejected Israel's demand, as it did not believe that Israel would transfer the cargo to Gaza,[74] and said that, "This mission is not about delivering humanitarian supplies, it's about breaking Israel's siege on 1.5 million Palestinians...[71][75] We want to raise international awareness about the prison-like closure of Gaza and pressure the international community to review its sanctions policy and end its support for continued Israeli occupation."[74]

The UNHRC fact-finding mission noted a "certain tension between the political objectives of the flotilla and its humanitarian objectives", which came to light "the moment the Government of Israel made offers to allow the humanitarian aid to be delivered via Israeli ports but under the supervision of a neutral organization". It also announced that Gaza did not have a deep sea port capable of receiving the sort of cargo ships participating in the flotilla. It concluded that "whilst the mission is satisfied that the flotilla constituted a serious attempt to bring essential humanitarian supplies into Gaza, it seems clear that the primary objective was political, as indeed demonstrated by the decision of those on board the Rachel Corrie to reject a Government of Ireland-sponsored proposal that the cargo in that ship be allowed through Ashdod intact".[76]

Some supporters of the flotilla said that "a violent response from Israel will breathe new life into the Palestine solidarity movement, drawing attention to the blockade."[77] Two of the activists (Ali Haydar Bengi and Ibrahim Bilgen) who died during the MV Mavi Marmara clash had previously said that they wished for martydom.[78] On 29 May, Aljazeera broadcast footage of Mavi Marmara activists participating in a chant calling for battle against Jews.

That's pretty much on par with the reductio ad hitlerum. This has nothing to do with the holocaust. "There was a holocaust once therefore Israelis should seek to destroy the economy of the occupied territories (unemployment being at 50% among people ages 25-29 years*) with a blockade that violates international law" <- not that logical of an argument really.

* Wouldn't be surprised if that many unemployed young men will lead to more extremism and violence. That's probably what some in Israeli leadership want though. That way they will get to say " see we can't give them their own country they are too violent... Guess we will just have to keep the territories and cleanse them of Palestinians instead." Maybe some of them will get disgruntled and launch their model rocket / weapons at Israel and the Israeli army can use it an excuse to slaughter more Palestinians who had nothing to do with it. It's not working anymore though. The rest of the world is on to the game and it has nothing to do with "anti-semitism". People like to attach the word "anti-semitism" to it because it's easier than making the effort to formulate a rational argument and gets a knee jerk reaction.

It's kind of like the boy who cried wolf as well. If people keep throwing out the term antisemitism at the drop of the hat no one is going to take it seriously when it actually occurs and it would be appropriate to use the term. When the Israelis have tanks , f-16s, the best all around army and air force in the region, and even a large supply of nuclear weapons [!] and all the Palestinians have are rocks and model rockets there is little to no chance of another holocaust taking place there unless maybe the Palestenians were at the recieveing end. They don't have to keep the Palestinians down to prevent a holocaust. Then top it off with "if people don't agree with everything Israel has ever done it must be because of antisemitism" and people are just going to cease taking either terms - holocaust or antisemitism - seriously. The holocaust is already so long past that it's lost some of it's force in the minds of people lets try not to totally trivialize it please. Not everything is a holocaust and not everyone is Hitler.

You clearly hold no regard for "Quakerly" solutions in this situation. Why the stinking hypocrisy?

Where's the hypocrisy on my part? I'm not the one claiming to be Quaker.

Seems a little odd, don't you think, for someone self-identifying as Quaker - known for their peace testament and pacifism - to wish for violence?

You're holding someone to a standard you do not hold to yourself.

I don't know, and neither do you.

You are, of course, asserting that the sinking of the ships is synonymous with violence. It ain't necessarily so.

If you were on a ship that someone sank, you just might find out how violent it really is
