Not sure what you include 'in the West' as but in the US news services/papers have always had political agendas (and many times got their start as party organs) as far back as the 3rd US election (Jefferson/Adams). Also beginning after the French & Indian War they became very anti-British. Best way to disseminate your position at that time. Even newspapers from the eastern US found their way to the frontier (Northwest Territories at that time).
