You're right. Apparently they were not being counted in the statistics I saw because they only counted those considered refugees by the UNHCR. Because Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE are not parties to any of the UN protocols on refugees, a they were excluded from many refugee counting mechanisms.

It should not be shocking as the Syrians going to Saudi Arabia are Arabs too and can easily assimilate.

Especially since Bush's advisers were the same people who talked his father into not doing this during the last Gulf War.

This was personally. Saddam put a hit out on Bush's father.

Perhaps a factor as Woodward points out in his book. However, the struggle morphed from a war on terrorism to a war of petroleum empires. Gulf States vs. Iran & Russia. It is a tangled web which can only be busted up by the Western nations (especially the US) by becoming energy independent. Make the oil barons irrelevant and the ME nations will sort things out on their own.

How long have these refugees been there? Assimilation is a long, drawn out process generally not complete until the second generation if that.

Seems assimilation in Arab nations is going well.

The US is not that dependent on ME oil. In 2012 less than 13% of our oil came from the ME. It is less now. The only way Europe can become more energy independent is by developing more alternative sources such as wind and solar. But they already do a lot more of that than we do.

Just because people speak the same language does not mean their cultures are that close. Syrians are very different different from Saudis.

Yes indeed. However both Muslim Syrians and Muslim Saudis share a strong common Muslim culture.

The "what happened to the socialist paradise.." statements are silly. Do you really want to compare violence in Sweden to violence in the US? A small number of right wing morons attacked some immigrants. Sad but hardly the downfall of Sweden. We have our fair share of hate crimes in our "capitalist utopia" too. 300 mass shootings last year as well. It's not Sweden that's drowning in blood.
