Okay, we've been talking a lot about what's wrong and such lately. So how do we help?

The purpose of this thread is to assemble a list of things we can do to help our synods succeed in their God-ordained mission.

Each person who wants to participate, please post one simple sentence (or sentence fragment) giving something we can do to help our synods fulfill their mission.

You can post more than once, but please only give one suggestion per post. That way, one person won't come in with a list of twenty all at once. Hopefully, it will give everyone a chance to participate.

When I get the time, I will assemble them and post them in this first post so that we can have a list of things we can do.

I'll start:

How we can help our synods (a list compiled from the responses below):

1. Pray for our Pastors daily.
2. Read and study the Bible regularly, consistently.
3. Pray for the leadership of our Synods.
4. Let our pastors know how much we appreciate and love them.
5. Pray that I be an asset to my church, not as I will, but as the Lord wills.
6. Support them with gifts of labor or $$$.
7. Get involved with not only the day to day operations of our Churches, but with the issues our synods are dealing with...let's not only tell folks when they're wrong...lets start telling them when they're right as well...
8. Pray and make sure in your church that the pastor is "equipping the saints" or feeding the sheep.
9. Help nominate and elect synod, district, and circuit leaders who are solidly founded in the Word and Confessions of the Church.
10. Get to know the Book of Concord.
11. Pay particular attention to the Augsburg Confession and the Large Catechism. However, I also say familiarize yourself with the 95 theses.
12. Forgive.
13. We must also learn proper Christian Apologetics (see post for additional explanation).
14. Learn how to self-study the Bible - lexicons, Strong's numbering system, background ... with commnetaries being the last of the tools in order to compare the results.
15. Get involved in polity also and not just theology.
16. Be more like the Bereans. Acts 17:11 "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."
17. Too much involvement in polity and politics is what has caused the current problems in the LCMS. I would have to say that involvement in theology is first and foremost as that seems to be lacking big time.
18. Think synodically, vote congregationally.
19. Keep clearly focused on the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

We must also learn proper Christian Apologetics.

Apologetics: To defend by words or arguments; That branch of theology by which Christians are enabled scientifically to justify and defend the precepts of their faith , and to answer its oponents.

Note here that one doesn't have to say they're sorry about what they believe. Note that one doesn't have to be embarrased by the truth, by what the Bible teaches, or by one's convictions.

It is through a form of Apologetics that the enemy has defeated us.

Actually from what I've noticed here is that many people arn't really addressing a proactive stance with LCMS. In other words they don't seem to want to get involved in politics. I've heard this response from many people outside this forum and in the LCMS which is "All was can do is pray". I don't know what to think of that.

I think you overlooked part of the original post:
"assemble a list of things we can do to help our synods succeed in their God-ordained mission"
Not everyone here is LCMS and so I wouldn't think of getting involved in LCMS politics. But I will tell LCMS pastors and lay people that they need to be in the Word; I have done the same for AALC and ELCA pastors and congregations. And yes, that is the primary problem afflicting our church bodies. How many congregations are living off leftovers from a pastor's study of the Word 15 years ago?
How many pastors (regardless of denominational affiliation) don't have a daily reading of the Scriptures? Once you get past the flurry of denials, you would be surprised how many fit that category! It's tough to face the mirror. I have heard church leaders present "Bible studies" that had no more resemblance to the text than my mother's autobiography.

So, politics may seem like the "solution" in the LCMS, but it isn't. The Word is necessary. Here is a quote very pertinent to this discussion:

“The more a theologian detaches himself from the basic Hebrew and Greek text of Holy Scripture, the more he detaches himself from the source of real theology! And real theology is the foundation of a fruitful and blessed ministry.” ~ Heinrich Bitzer, Light on the Path

(Bitzer was a banker who wanted to help pastors continue to read Greek and Hebrew, so he published daily readings in both languages in this book.)

RadMan,

Could you boil that down into one sentence you like so I can add it to the list?

Thanks! :)

Get involved in polity also and not just theology.

PS: Actually I was thinking of writing what filo answered but it seems like it was already covered. I just wanted to add that many people ignore the obvious like getting involved and put more emphasis on the easy way out.
