HL Mencken was a great writer, but in many ways not a very nice man. His friends were therefore astonished when after a brief time married, he remained completely loyal and nursed tenderly his dying wife. He responded simply: a deal is a deal. Those people who go through life feeling no gratitude to those who help them but instead always look out for number one are to be greatly pitied. They have failed to understand that in this Vale of Tears the only path to true happiness is to do good to others, what Jesus taught in the Golden Rule. We are here such a short time. Too short to waste on selfishness, which is always a dead end.
