There are about 400,000 identified species of beetles which make up about 25% of all known life-forms. It would seem that the Earth really was intended for beetles. J. B. S. Haldane (a British geneticist and evolutionary biologist) is credited as saying that the Creator, if He exists, has "an inordinate fondness for beetles".

In Haldane's 1949 book What is Life? The Layman's View of Nature, he writes:

Dobson Flies. They can get as long as a grown man's hand, and are a good fifty times more terrifying in real life when they are flying at you with murder on their minds (and there is always murder on their minds. Always.) Native to where I live, but thankfully rare to encounter.

The one with the big pincers is the male and mostly harmless. The female is on the right and can give a really nasty bite.
