Global warming pushes ocean temperatures off the charts

Whatever break we had been getting looks like it is over. We may see a rapid temp rise now.

I hope not. Some climatologists say they just don't know what is causing this super-spike and it is not predicted on the normal models. Temperatures could and should go down once the natural variability shakes out of the system. Climate is measured in 20 year intervals - so even though last year may have crept over 1.5 I don't think we're there yet till it is the new decade average. Did you hear how the Tongan volcanic eruption may be one of the extra factors turbo charging temperatures? All that extra water vapour way up in the stratosphere.

Will This Eruption Affect the Climate?​

It appears so far that the answer is no.

Sulfur dioxide that is released from volcanic eruptions like this one can have a cooling effect on Earth, but Hunga Tonga released a relatively minuscule amount of SO2 compared to other climate-changing eruptions.

Just not big enough to cool the atmosphere much.
