I believe it was the second person of the Trinity, Jesus.

I don't see how it couldn't be.

He does change names at this point in the story - it's literally an angel of Jehovah - the God of Salvation. While the name of God who commanded the sacrfice is Ha-Elohim, the true God. Interesting I suppose.

God (elohiym) instructs Abraham to slay his son. Abraham knew the promises of God and reasoned that even if Isaac died, God would raise him up from the dead.

The angle of the LORD intercedes. Abraham declares the LORD my PROVISION, will PROVIDE.

The angel of the LORD calls a second time ... and swears an oath. Hebrews 6:13 asserts it is God who swore.

The burning bush is another example. And there are others (OT and NT).

To be clear, Jesus is Lord and God. He is not an angel, not a created being.

Jesus Christ is God, the Son - I'm sure He can appear however He chooses. I'm not taking one side or the other, I just don't think you can that it isn't Christ based on the text, afterall Abraham did not know about the Son, per se.

One wonders though. After all there was his son and he said, the LORD would provide. Provide what? Abraham believed God.
