I had no idea that there was a story about a doctor "putting down" patients related to Katrina. I don't like the idea of human's "putting down" healthy dogs... but to use the same phrase like that for a human is barbaric... and reminicent of a recent serial killer in the press.

About the military... I don't know this but I suspect this is a long standing practice.

I do not support Euthanasia.

That's why you don't join the military. Because you are asked to do things that may be morally wrong to you. Imagine if you were a US soldier, fighting and killing your own Orthodox brother's and sister's in Serbia. To me allegience to my faith means more than allegience to any country. One thing that could be different is let's say being in an Army whose country's national faith is Orthodoxy, like Greece. When the Greeks fought for independance from Turkey, they were not fighting just for Greece's freedom, but for the freedom of Orthodoxy. So basically they were fighting for their faith. Sorry I went off topic....again.

My best friend was in the Army, stationed in W. Germany during the '80s and he said they were told that if the Soviets invaded and they had to clear the highways of civilians, their orders were to just shoot them and move their cars out of the way rather than try to evacuate or direct them. At first I thought he was just messing with me but he was serious. I also remember reading that US troops were polled to see if they would fire on US citizens if ordered to. 60% said they would, according to the article I read. (This was several years ago.)

Well, I'm alarmed by President Bush's discussion about sending in the military in the event of an outbreak of avian flu. It might be the right thing to do but it just bothered me that out of the blue he made that comment.

Would they kill the birds, or the people infected, or both?

This does scare me in light of the above comments about the military actions where the civilians would be killed for inadvertently and unknowingly being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

SO I suppose my grandpa should not have fought in WWII becuase he was Lutheran and he was aiding in the killing of lutherans as well? War is always bad... but I think the Church's own witness attests to the fact that it cannot always be a black and white situation.

And also, what makes it better for me to kill an iraqui muslim than a Russian Orthodox? If I should stand on the side lines and watch the enemy that happens to have a christian fighting for them wreak havoc... why shouldn't I do the same if a muslim country is the enemy?

This is scary and according to many specialists (including those of the WHO), this would be a very ineffective approach since the flu spreads so easily. They said they would appreciate much more if President Bush would offer the armies services for helping transport materials and caring for patience and so... but not for a military quarantine. They all but said it was an absurd and naive solution to a very possible and real problem. So it's not only dumb.. it's dangerous because we would be using the army that could HELPING to rather do something that is largely ineffective.

Bush scares me... I'm just glad that my vote for him was FINALLY partially redeemed by him putting Roberts in the Supreme Court.. we'll see about this Miers woman. Seems like a toss up to me.
