The Jews of the first century regarded virtually all illness as demonic in nature. When Jesus drove seven demons from Mary the Magdalene scripture saying that she had been extremely ill.

It was thought that the sick person was so weak in their spirit that their body could be occupied by unclean/impure spirit/s
Steering their actions and words.

So when they spoke it was the unclean spirit speaking

A little village in Russia, there was a mad dog who attacked people, they meant the dog had an been overtaken by an unclean spirit.

Putting their heads together one of them named a certain Sage who knew the formula for driving out
unclean spirits.

So they sent after him, wiith great expectation they
watched what would happen.

So he came and on entering the village the dog jumped on him, starting to tear him apart,

somehow he managed to escape.

The villagers were baffled they asked the bloody and torn Sage,

"We thought you had the formula for driving out unclean spirits"

"I do" replied the Sage, "But before I could open my mouth he jumped onto me."
