King Saul had a toxic personality who had erratic mood swings especially when it came to how he treated David.
To elaborate, at certain times he would be nice to King David, and other times, he would become cruel. For example, 1 Samuel 19:7-10 & 1 Samuel 24:8-22 are biblical passages that show how King Saul's treatment of David was erratic.
Therefore, King Saul's reconciliations with David ultimately failed because of King Saul own actions.

Finally, in 1 Samuel 26:20-25 bible passage, there is another chance for King Saul to reconcile with David. The 1 Samuel 26:21 verse quotes Saul request to David to return which is an attempt to reconcile. However, David knows from his past experience that King Saul will go back to treating David badly again. Therefore, in in 1 Samuel 26:20-25, David ultimately quietly and subtly just avoids having any sort of relationship with King Saul. Essentially, David decides to Avoid having a relationship with a toxic personality like King Saul.

David experiences with a toxic personality like King Saul, and David ultimate decision to end his relationship with King Saul should serve as a good example for us Christians. In other words, David does Not take revenge by vengefully attacking King Saul due to his poor treatment of David Instead, David wisely (Matthew 5:39) turns the other cheek by just deciding to end his relationship with King Saul by avoiding him.

But he had very loving sharing with Johnathan Saul's son. So, with the evil relating of Saul, God brought a very great relationship blessing.

But I would say David did not totally avoid Saul, but he stayed ready for love, possibly praying with hope for Saul.

And wrong people can be reached and helped by means of God. An example of this is in 1 Peter 3:1-4.

God uses example and prayer.

But yes Saul's character was evil and untrustworthy, no matter how Saul made gestures of friendship and repentance, I would say.

But even while we might wisely stay clear of certain people, our example and prayer can stay with them to affect them.

Correct. Christians should always pray for their enemies, and those who persecute them.

However, David suitable response tells us that we Never have to be someone's doormat. The aforementioned toxic personality topic is very important to keep in mind when Christians are looking for someone to date, and ultimately marry. The following verses from Proverbs in the Bible strongly suggest Avoidance of contentious/quarrelsome personalities:

Proverbs 21:9
New American Standard Bible 1995

9 It is better to live in a corner of a roof
Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

Quote

Proverbs 25:24
New American Standard Bible 1995

24 It is better to live in a corner of the roof
Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

Quote

Proverbs 21:19
New American Standard Bible 1995

19
It is better to live in a desert land
Than with a contentious and vexing woman.

Quote

Proverbs 27:15-16
New American Standard Bible 1995

15
A constant dripping on a day of steady rain
And a contentious woman are alike;
16
He who would restrain her restrains the wind,
And grasps oil with his right hand.

And there were men who could be pretty nasty even with Jesus Himself. There were times when Jesus stayed clear of where evil and nasty people wanted to kill Him. Plus, He spent personal quality time with His disciples in the garden and in homes. But in public He might take on scribes and Pharisees.

Though I personally do not subscribe to this here is an alternative answer to this subject. https://jbqnew.jewishbible.org/assets/Uploads/434/JBQ_434_sostredavidstreason.pdf
I do believe that once Saul was told he would no longer be King (I Samuel 15:23) he should have vacated the throne. Saul never saw Samuel again until the day of his death. This left King Saul basically in the flesh culminating with the witch of Endor.

David's suitable response was based on the love, reverence,, & devotion that he had for God (His will & purposes). Actually, it's an example of having the fear of the Lord.
"David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped, and saw where Saul lay with Abner son of Ner, commander of his army; and Saul was lying in the encampment, with the army encamped around him." "David said to Abishai, Do not destroy him; for who can raise his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?" "11 The Lord forbid that I should raise my hand against the Lord’s anointed; but take now the spear that is at his head and the bottle of water, and let us go." ( I Sam 26)
