U.S. president-elect Barack Obama plans to travel to Canada for his first international trip after he takes office, the Prime Minister's Office confirmed Saturday.
"We have been in close contact with president-elect Obama's transition team. We can confirm that the president-elect has accepted the prime minister's invitation to visit Canada soon after he is inaugurated," a statement released by Stephen Harper's office said.
U.S. transition aides also said Obama picked his country's northern neighbour as his first venture outside the United States as president, but they added they could not discuss the date for the trip, nor its agenda.

Yeah! In your FACE Mexico! :p

:D

(For those who don't know, which is everyone probably, it was a big thing up here when Dubya picked Mexico for his first foreign visit instead of us back in 2000. We're an insecure people, you see. ^_^)

What significance does this have anyways on the people of Canada in the first place and why would it matter which country the President of the United States went to first?

Doesn't.

Trying to make a lighthearted thread. Poking fun at our Canadian selves for thinking it means anything. There's an awful lot of rancour in this forum right now. Just wanted to post a diversion from that.

:)

Hey, it says in the article Obama is going to meet with a 'world leader', so how does the Prime Minister of Canada qualify as a world leader? Or is he going to be meeting with someone important while he's there?

(just joking, I love Canada!)

You'd make a good Canadian. We'd say pretty much the same thing...

This used to be standard until Bush.
The true historic moment, would be If Obama visits your country.
I was hoping Bush would use the stepping down of Fidel, as a sign to
open relations.
Hopefully, Obama will be the one.

Canada should be first, Mexico second. Check in with your friends closest first.
