British Muslims are becoming a nation within a nation, the former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission has warned.

Commenting on a ground-breaking survey, Trevor Phillips said we are “in danger of sacrificing a generation of young British people to values that are antithetical to the beliefs of most of us, including many Muslims”.

He called for a new, tougher approach to integration and the abandonment of “the failed policy of multiculturalism".

The survey had made “one truly terrifying” conclusion that “Muslims who have separatist views about how they want to live in Britain are far more likely to support terrorism than those who do not”, added Mr Phillips, who ran the EHRC until 2012 and was previously in charge of the Commission for Racial Equality.

Funny how south asians have managed to exist peacefully for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years with different religions[which include Islam]. Yet the west can't figure it out.
Not really that peacefully...

There is for the most part a lot of peace. There are outbreaks of great violence too. This doesn't differ too much from the West.

I think this sort of problem is the same in every ghetto[whatever its form] everywhere in the world. The religion, ethnicity, or whatever doesn't matter. If you're poor and are of a select people group that is granted little in mobility..then this will happen.

I didn't know India and Pakistan were parts of the west

Quote:

"52 per cent believed homosexuality should not be legal in Britain, 39 per cent agreed “wives should always obey their husbands”, and 31 per cent said it was acceptable for a man to have more than one wife."

Imagine the outrage if one Christian in the US said any of that. Actually, we don't have to imagine, it has been demonstrated here time and again.

Looking at this in historical context, it's important to note that the % has been much higher in the past and overall, Muslims in Europe are becoming more tolerant of gay people. If the trend was going the other way, it would be disturbing indeed. It takes decades to change attitudes towards homosexuality and make sure the next generation doesn't grow up with the culture of hatred towards gay people. Just 30 years ago here in the US, a majority also thought that homosexuality should be illegal and look how far we've come now. So while half is a large fraction and nothing to celebrate about, the silver lining is that the fraction is much higher among the parents, grandparents, etc. of today's British Muslims and in the future, it will shrink -- it's inevitable.

Here in the US, there have also been surveys about acceptance of homosexuality by religion:

Turns out US Muslims are actually more liberal when it comes to homosexuality then Evangelicals. So it's also important not to generalize too much from what we see in Britain over to the US.

Now, the poll/survey in the article has some rather serious problems as well. It is only of 1000 Muslims, and it greatly oversamples from areas where there are concentrated groups - 20% muslim population (i.e. often ghettos/slums where many poor Muslim immigrants end up living in), and doesn't proportionately sample from the entire country. Only about half of all British Muslims live in areas with less than 20% (where one would expect more conservative views to remain in place and harder to budge). Other reports on this survey have pointed out that the sample also overrepresents Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants (again, a group where one would expect such views), while vastly undersampling Muslim converts from the native British population.

This would be rather like selectively oversampling from extremely conservative Christian groups (like Phelps' group and some of the other far right Christian groups in the south) and then drawing a conclusion about all Christians in America.

Why are you so focused on such a narrow question?
