It's hard to evaluate putting this statue, there, from a Christian point
of view.

The integrity of Billy Graham seems to be beyond question. And I have
no problem with that. I would say the same about Fr. Boyle, who founded
Homeboy Industries, which has brought thousands of gang members out of
the gang culture, and pointed them toward Christianity.

But, as with many who do evangelism, or Christian outreach, it is too easy to
see them as complete representatives of Christian doctrine.

May each of us do as well as Billy Graham, and Fr. Boyle.

But as these men themselves would say, they are not necessarily scholars
of Christianity, nor theologians.

Would that the public places in America had more reminders of selfless
Christians, who have made such a good use of their lives.

I don't see this as a form of idolatry. Rather it is a recognition to a man who gave his life to Christ.

As his son says:
"This isn’t just a statue of my father — it represents the One that he surrendered his life to and the message that he preached for more than 80 years, that God loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us from our sins,"
"What I appreciate most is that this is an opportunity for everyone in future generations who sees the statue to be reminded of God’s love, grace and forgiveness."

I suspect Graham's reaction would be to thank everyone for the honor, but I think he would rather not have a statue honoring him. For all the honors and attention he got from the media and from political leaders, he remained a modest man.
