Anyone else a musician? Play in a band? Record music, anything?
Yeah I play the guitar and sing and do some recording. Well try to anyway. I havnt really played in a band though I have jammed a lot with other musos. I have been doing a lot of recording and trying to learn how to record properly. I am realizing it is also about the quality of your equipment if you want to get the best sound. Well maybe I tell myself that anyway.Anyone else a musician? Play in a band? Record music, anything?
When I first heard your recordings I thought they were using loops or sequences downloaded from online. That is great using real instruments. That is one major difference from mine. I could only dream of using real instruments. I can see what you mean by the acoustics. You can hear the authentic sound of the instrument acoustics in the different locations of the cathedral. I use the guitar as the only real instrument and then build up the rest with vst instruments. My recording software has many instruments. But they never sound real but more electronic. Yet I hear that artist nowadays use these to make hit songs in their bedrooms. I guess if you can get the better software you can get closer to a real sound but it never can substitute the real thing.Well, Steve, I've been doing this for about 35 years. It takes time and money.
The key to recording good, authentic sounding audio is to control your surroundings. Acoustics is everything. The following is a composition of mine done at the Washington National Cathedral after lots of experimentation on microphone placement. Each instrument section was recorded separately, with separate microphone locations for each recoirding so that the resonance in the space did not conflict with other instrument types. Making use of, and controlling, your surrounding acoustics is an art. Mixing is also an art that takes time and practice.
