Merrick Garland to testify; questions likely on Hunter Biden, Trump trials

Attorney General Merrick Garland is set to testify Wednesday morning before the House Judiciary Committee, a session that is likely to be contentious as Republicans press the nation’s top law enforcement official on a host of politically charged cases. It will be Garland’s first congressional appearance since federal grand juries indicted former president Donald Trump — twice — and since he appointed a special counsel to handle the investigation and prosecution of President Biden’s son Hunter Biden.

A three-minute video posted Tuesday evening by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, gives a glimpse into the combative tone Wednesday’s hearing is likely to take. The video — titled “Why hasn’t DOJ been square with us?” — combines various excerpts of Jordan questioning an IRS whistleblower with news clips about the charges against Hunter Biden. [I wonder if it includes the testimony of the 4 people who contradict the 'whistleblower''s claims about Weiss.]

[From an excerpt of the AG's prepared remarks:] "Our job is not to take orders from the President, from Congress, or from anyone else, about who or what to criminally investigate,” Garland will say. “As the President himself has said, and I reaffirm here today: I am not the President’s lawyer. I will also add that I am not Congress’s prosecutor. The Justice Department works for the American people. Our job is to follow the facts and the law, wherever they lead. And that is what we do.”

That right there should have been all that was needed to be said. Game over - but it won't stop the right wingers from advancing with a true witch-hunt and continue to make accusations without evidence.

Massie [R-KY] had referenced Garland’s previous testimony from two years ago when Garland declined to discuss ongoing criminal inquiries [as he should] related to the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, and asserted that Garland’s actions were obstructing Congress’s constitutional oversight responsibilities.

Swalwell [D-CA] responded to Massie by displaying a clock indicating the number of days Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) had avoided testifying before Congress in response to a subpoena linked to the January 6, 2021 events.

"Mr. Jordan, is about 500 days into evading his subpoena,” Swalwell said. “So, if we’re going to talk about contempt of Congress, let’s get real.”
