Westminster, 20th November 2007 - Today's reports that Japanese scientists have developed highly promising stem cells without using embryos has been welcomed by British pro-life group the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC).
Anthony Ozimic, SPUC political secretary, commented: "These truly remarkable results in the rapidly-advancing field of adult stem cell research show that one can be both pro-life and pro-science. Experimenting with embryos, on the other hand, is both bad ethics and bad science. Science advances when it respects human life, but stalls or even goes backwards when it treats human beings as mere research material.
"Adult stem cell research is already providing benefits for patients in scores of different medical conditions, whereas over two decades of embryo experimentation has produced little if anything of research value, let alone anything of value for patients.
"The government's embryo bill promotes the redundant science of destructive embryo research and therefore the House of Lords should vote against the bill when the bill is debated again tomorrow", concluded Mr Ozimic.

...say some people who are opposed to embrionic stem cell research.

Mike I was watching this in the news and it looks like they have been very successful so far, if they truly have had the success they showed in the TV then there is no more excuses to carry on pushing for embrionic stem cell research.

See the difference between my thread (the first thread, making this redundant) and this one (the second one making it redundant) this that mine (the first one) has a completely different tone.

I simply put forth the matter as a matter of fact and let you come to your own conclusions about the morals.

The facts (are in mine, btw, the first one) are not about the morals of stem cell research but that the technology does work but creates some problems with the DNA that will have to be overcome, maybe taking years.

This thread (the redundant one) contains a slanted article that 1) downplays the DNA issues and screams about the (supposed) value to adult stems cells and the pro-life value at the expense of the true facts of the situation.

Has embryo research been exposed as redundant ?

Not as redundant as this thread has been exposed to be.

Currently, the article said, there is a possibility of the skin cells morphing into cancerous ones because of changes made to the DNA.

Scientists did say, however, that they were confident this problem could be overcome with further research and experimentation.

Several months ago there was an article about amniotic fluid stem cells that also seemed promising.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/07/AR2007010700674.html

It is good that there are alternatives and several promising research trails that don't involve embryonic stem cells. Hopefully one or more of them will be productive.
