Anything that takes away your focus from God is just plain bad. I believe if we take gambling to a point of addiction that would be indeed sinful. Leaving things to a game of chance seems like the gambler does not have much trust in God, which is to say, leaning on one's flesh and works. All God's promises are YES and AMEN... I think I'll stick to that :)

Christianity is not about what is sin or not sin for all . It is about walking in the Spirit and knowing what to do for you individually .

I know of some Christians who have stated that the Lord told them that they may not gamble . I also know some Christians who are free to do so because the Lord has said nothing to them .

I think that almost everything in life is a gamble, sort of.
Have you ever paid for something that turned out to be a disappointment?
At least when you are gambling (being realistic) you know that the odds are against you, you are just doing it for fun.
The Bible speaks of the disciples casting lots to decide on an issue. I know that is not quite the same.
If you are one of meager means (like most of us) then you probably have no business in a thousand dollar round of poker.
But to take twenty dollars into a poker game and quit when the money is gone, IMO is okay. As long as you can afford the loss.
However, if you feel that it is wrong, then you should abstain.

A great question, and a question back to you:

Do you think gambling would bring life to you, or death to you.

Answer that, and that's your answer.

Cowgirl - God has given us everything in this world as stewards. That is we have the right to use and live in it, and the responsibility to do the right thing and nurture it. That includes our bodies.

Therefore, to take the money we have earned with the toil of our backs and to gamble with it - is that a good stewardship? Only each individual can answer that truly.

Obviously if you gamble all your wage, then the answer would be no. If you put a couple of dollars in a machine once a year - then you might answer yes.

The real issue is that if gambling is something you have to do and you regret the money you lose, and you owe money on bills because you have lost it gambling, then not only are you not being a good steward, but you are placing gambling first in your life.

God is a jealous God, and He must always be first. So not only is this attitude causing you to be a bad steward, but it is also taking your away from God. Therefore away from life.

As to the soldiers who gambled for Jesus clothes at the foot of the Cross. They placed His robe first and His offer of salvation through His death - last. That instance of gambling brought death, I think.

One last thought. Gambling actually allows for a lack of trust in God to enter our lives. We no longer trust Him to provide for us, therefore we turn to gambling.

Unfortunately I LOVE gambling and if I didn't tell myself that it was a sin, I would gamble all the time. One thing that finally stopped me was that my pastor told the entire congregation that the church would not accept any money won by gambling. That was that for me.
That's too bad for the church.

Money in my hands is good money.

Gambling can be defined as “risking money in an attempt to multiply the money on something that is against the odds.” The Bible does not specifically condemn gambling, betting or the lottery. The Bible does warn us, however, to stay away from the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5). Scripture also encourages us to stay away from attempts to "get rich quick" (Proverbs 13:11; 23:5; Ecclesiastes 5:10). Also, there are far better things we can be doing with our money than gambling it away (Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:7). I suppose that gambling could be acceptable if it was done in very limited amounts and on rare occasions. People waste money on all kinds of things. However, in light of the principles above, I definitely do not believe gambling is honoring to God.

I have personal experience with gambling, and I can assure you that it is NOT of God, and it is NOT acceptable. Ask me about the house I used to have sometime.

I think generally gambling is wrong for we are to be good stewarts of our money and when we go to a casino we usually end of never winning for they get it all back. Having said that, last year while visiting my daughter in Biloxi MS, where they have many casinoes just to see what it was all about we went to a few and had a good time. We each took twenty dollars and said when it was gone that was it and it was. They have great buffets in those casinos and we had a very good time. Our concious was clear and we want to go back to Biloxi this year for it is a great place. Maybe drop a few bucks in the slots for with twenty dollors you can play the nickel machines all day and enjoy the food. In short it can be a sin like everything else if you love it more than God.

Ditto with what MickD7 said. By the way, I've just recently come back from Nevada. I had to take a friend's mom home--she needed someone to share driving expenses with her--she lives in Lake Tahoe Ca. I had never been to Nevada before and there are slot machines everywhere. I wanted to try out the nickel slot machines--I did as mickd7. Just for fun. It's a good thing I don't live in Nevada. I lost my money in Lake Tahoe, but won some of it back at the slot machine in the airport waiting to get on my flight back home.--I won 37.00 dollars. I just wanted to experience the thrill of pulling the handle down and having coins coming out of the slot machine. But I know not to make it a habit. What's really weird, is while in Nevada, on the way up to Lake Tahoe, I had a dream that I was at a particular pastor and wife's(that I know of back home) house and that they had pay telephone machines on their wall that acted like slot machines!

I don't think gambling is right, I believe it is sin.

We are called to holiness, that means to be seperated from the world, set apart for God.

Why even touch something that has destroyed the lives of so many people. The devil has power, and messing with stuff like that is what the devil wants. Don't give him that chance. I past a COG one day and I saw a saying on their sign that has always stuck with me and it is: Give Satan an inch and he'll turn into a ruler. That's why I think even buying a scratch-off and a casual $20 at the casino is sin, and I will have no part of it.

I'm a semi professional poker player.
I actually win money playing poker.
And sometimes I play alot, but actually I rarely play it's seasonal for me.
It's one of those games where you have to be sharp as an eagles eye, and know where you are at in the hand.
When I'm on, I can amaze you with my reads.
But when I'm off, I simply lose the taste for the game, and stop playing.

People call me every week, sometimes dailey to try and set up a friendly 20$ buy in game. I have played 2 times in 3 months. I just don't feel like playing.

I hate casino games(black jack, dice games, etc), because I know the favor is going for the house. I tried black jack a few times, always lost 10 or 20 bucks, and stopped.
I just don't get it, why would anyone like slots??? And yet it's the biggest money maker for casinos.

So as far as I'm concerned, gambling isn't a black and white issue. I think it's up to the individual.
