Today is the optional memorial of St. Frances of Rome, religious. She was a wealthy woman who was encouraged in a vision to help the poor. After the death of her husband, she founded a religious order, which she led until her death in 1440.

St. Simplicius, Pope, died on this day in 483 A.D. and was buried in the Vatican. He educated the faithful on the sacraments saying they were important by themselves. The church they were administered in did not increase the level of grace received.

St. Eulogius of Cordoba was martyred on this day in 859 A.D. He was a priest imprisoned several times for giving aid and comfort to Christians suffering from Islamic persecution. His martyrdom resulted from preaching the Gospel in the king’s court.

Today the Church recalls St. Seraphina, virgin. St. Seraphina was stricken by a malady that made any movement painful. She united her suffering with Christ’s and spent her life performing tasks for those less fortunate than herself. She died in 1253.

Today the Church honors St. Roderick, priest. He lived in Moorish Spain in the 9th century. While in a coma after a fight, his brother falsely told authorities Roderick converted to Islam. When he awoke and denied it and was martyred for being Christian.

St. Leobinus of Chartres, priest, died on this day in 558 A.D. He was born a peasant with a desire for an education. Leobinus worked for a monastery by day in exchange for an education at night. He later developed a gift for healing and other miracles.

Today is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin. The Bible describes Joseph as a just man and tells of his role as foster father of Jesus. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Joseph as the Patron Saint of the Universal Church.

Bl. Robert Dalby died on this day in 1589. He was a protestant minister in England who became a Catholic priest. Catholic persecution was raging through England and he was soon arrested. Because he was a priest he was tortured and killed.

Today the Church recalls St. Deogratius of Carthage, bishop. He sold all his church property to ransom Christian slaves, especially trying to buy the freedom of whole families. In 457 A.D. he was killed by Arian heretics who denied Christ’s divinity.

Today is the optional memorial of St. Toribio de Mogrovejo, bishop. In 1581 he became the bishop of Peru, which was under Spanish rule. He worked hard as a defender of the rights of the native people, and founded schools and hospitals for their benefit.

Today the Church honors St. Catherine of Sweden. Widowed at a young age, she spent her time with her mother, St. Bridget, teaching religion to the poor. She entered a convent founded by her mother, and served as its abbess until her death in 1381.
