Why, he asked, with a very worried face
Is there a moose standing still outside my place?
I don't recall saying 'come on down'
As he examined its antlers with a frown.
How, he asked, will I get to the store?
I'm out of bread and I need some more.
When, he asked, will this moose deign to go?
I'm sure it will see me as the greatest of foes!
I daren't set foot outside my door
He'll charge and send me skidding on all fours!
The day wore on and then the moose turned.
Why, he said, are my forests all burned?
Your home is solid and protects you well
Half my home has a sign saying SELL.
The man shook his head, 'did I hear that aright?'
"That moose was speaking' and then in the light
Of dusk settling in, the moose leapt away
And the man stepped onto the lawn to survey
The half-stripped mountains towering so clear
And asked himself why suffering felt so near.
