  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

evolution and the devil

i'm a new Christian so the answer this question could be easy but here goes. I believe the Bible and everything it says is the word of God. I believe God can do anything.
So since in Genesis it say God created the universe and the earth and everything on it in 6 days, I believe it happened. I also belive that God created Adam and Eve and we all came from them.
You can say a week to God is seven days or a million years but either way he created everything. God also gave the devil rule over the earth until Jesus comes back. So could the devil plant the fossil evidence that man has found to cause doubts in the minds of man. So that man would think that one part of the Bible is not true and if one part is not true then maybe all of it is not true.
I have never heard this theory before and it just came to me last night.
I think that God is all powerful so my question is how powerful has God allowed the devil to be? Maybe powerful enough to plant fossils around the earth to cause doubt.

Actually I think that this is a fairly common idea, but at least you have phrased it in such a way that "evolutionists" are not intentionally evil conspiritors, but rather people that have been fooled by fabricated evidence. One problem I have this idea is that while originally a majority of the evidence for evolution was fossil based, this is no longer true. A lot of the evidence now comes from molecular biology. Even if you dismiss sequence similarity/homology out of hand like many creationists tend to do, there is still good evidence to understand it as a mechanism by following bechemical interactions in genetics.

Thusly, you come back full circle to having to have scientists either being in a satan back conspiracy and presenting false information, which I don't believe (and I've never been invited to the meetings, but I am just a graduate student ;)).

Besides all of this, a lot of christians believe in evolution-- antievolutionism/antiscience is (IMHO) pretty much just the dogma of certain (mostly american) sects of christianity. YECs are pretty underrepresented in other western nations. You can believe in Jesus and still believe in evolution.

If we cannot rely on what the natural world tells us via empirical evidence, how can we know anything?

If the devil is trying to mislead man by falsifying fossils, he could also be falsifying any given scientific experiment or observation, just to cause trouble.

Once you start down that slope, then it is not possible to know anything, or to trust your own senses, or to believe ANY evidence for ANYTHING.

Actually, he's not saying that. He's saying we could be being deceived by evil. There's a pretty big difference.

We could speculate all kinds of POSSIBLE things.

Maybe we are all just brains in a jar, being fed information from a computer, like The Matrix.

Maybe some god created the entire Universe 5 minutes ago, and all our memories are illusionary.

What if aliens are beaming thoughts into our heads to just make us THINK we are living a certain way, and we're REALLY their slaves.

You can play the what if game all day and you could go crazy if you start believing some wild fantasy.

First of all, welcome to Christian Forums, 1alley!

And, congratulations on your new walk with God!

There are many Christians, including myself, who believe that God created life through an evolutionary process. I don't think that God would have us believe in a literal 6 day creation, and then have the earth and universe become saturated with contradictory evidence.

That being said, the fact that you are a new Christian, I would humbly suggest that you focus on the Gospel, Christian fellowship and things like that. This is somewhat of a rough-and-tumble crowd in the science forums. Things are heavily debated here, which could easily distract you from developing a solid spiritual foundation.

I wish you well, my brother. PM me if you need any help. :)

Thanks John
I was not trying to call anybody evil or stupid. I just thought it was an interesting question and wanted to hear what people thought. I don't think the answer to this question matters weather I go to heaven or not. So I really don't care that much, nobody really knows now but we will all find out one day.

By your own admission, whatever the answer may be you won't accept it if it contradicts your Bible. Do you feel that wave of ignorance wash over you?

You can say a week to God is seven days or a million years but either way he created everything.
A week is a week no matter who/what you are. You'll learn that the Bible was written specifically to be understood by us mere mortals, and a week to us is 7, 24hr days.

God also gave the devil rule over the earth until Jesus comes back.
So we all get labelled sinners, yet the 'Good Lord™' puts Evil in charge of us for the last 2000-odd years until whenever? Erm...great plan.

So could the devil plant the fossil evidence that man has found to cause doubts in the minds of man. So that man would think that one part of the Bible is not true and if one part is not true then maybe all of it is not true.
Well lets see.... On one hand we have Satan with such Godly powers that he can transform the physical state of planet Earth so that all possible evidence points towards the planet being 11ish billion years old with a history of extinct species like dinosaurs to mention but one, and pretty strong evidence that humans were anatomically different over 30,000 years ago, and ape-like if you were to travel back millions of years further.

or

Your book was written by humans who had little understanding of such sciences and made stuff up that's now so painfully wrong that Christians have to now make up lame and laughable excuses for the errors.

Guess which one I'll choose.

I have never heard this theory before and it just came to me last night.
You're not the first, and unfortunately not the last.

I think that God is all powerful so my question is how powerful has God allowed the devil to be? Maybe powerful enough to plant fossils around the earth to cause doubt.
The question is why would an alleged 'good' being give any powers to evil the first place? Not a great example to us humans heh?

p.s. Here's another scenario: The Devil created the Bible to divide and separate us, and make fundamentalist Christians look foolish. Now that makes more sense and would only need paper and ink - no fossil burying or forging of the Earths geologic history. I mean, if I was trying to lead Christians astray I would write a book that they'd all trust without question.... what a plan!

My hypothesis precisely. In fact, if there is such a thing as a devil, I'd venture to say that - judging from the fruits - he seems to be the author of the holy books of nearly every major religion. :/

Not really. A new Christian coming in here to debate is putting them on a jury and you are the defense lawyer who tries to muddy up the truth enough to cause doubt in the new Christians mind to alter their decisions.

Where in either creation story (Genesis 1 or 2) does it say that the devil had ANYTHING to do with creation? Nowhere. Creation is due SOLELY to God. Therefore there is no way the devil could have put anything into creation to deceive us.

This idea ends up denying what you assert in the beginning: that the Bible is the word of God.
