20,000 British emigrants

I saw in the news recently that the Australian government has asked the British government for 20,000 Brits with certain skills to come over to Australia to work because you's lack people with those certain skills e.g. plastorer's.

Thoughts??

We are lacking young people going into those kind of trades, so teh govenment has thrown open the doors to 20 000 Brits (I think a few other countries as well)

I think you'll find Britain is also lacking the skills of those like plasterers, plumbers etc. If you need any IT people (ie me) then let me know where and when!

I feel a bit mad about that. I live in Darwin (northern Australia), which has a major skills shortage, cause once people get their skills developed they go to the big cities down south. But being half British (my Dad's British, so I have a dual citizenship tho I've never been to Britain), I quite like the British and love their accents and culture and I welcome them to our country. But I'd like to see more Aussies get off their butts, and do something with their lives. Like Willo says, our young people aren't getting into the trade industry so much. Most people seem to be on the dole, or have degree's and work in the office.

The problem stems from too many people going to university and forsaking a 'trade', perhaps there is a problem with perception.

Well...ahem...'expert' is perhaps stretching the definition of the word a bit but yes I am in that line of industry.

Well I actually already have an RRV so I wouldn't actually need to apply for a work permit. I've got 3 years left on my visa so I plan on moving over once I've saved up a bit more, sold my house etc

If i left where i live Australia would be the only place i'd think of moving to, but i'd never live N.Ireland. Wheres the best place to live?

We each think our State is the best.

But, I think for the British folk, who I would Love to see come to Australia, Victoria or Tasmania due to the cooler Climate. Or South Australia.

bytheway...my hubby (who's English born, came out here when he was 12) would be horrified that you would judge what Australia is like by neighbours... we have SO MUCH MORE than that!!
