Perhaps you weren't around when a younger Pope John Paul II was the rock star of the religious world. He drew millions of people, including multitudes of teens and young adults, to Rome and to come to see and hear him on his travels. He is indoubtedly the most popular pope ever. No pope has ever been beloved by all, but JPII must lead the list.Martin, you should not assume it's dislike anyone has for the pope nor should you assume it's that because one would not want him recognized. I explained myself fully what my issues are and it's not with the pope but with those who are falling over him. In my gut there is something about how those who did have so much disdain for the last two pope are falling over this one. Why? When this pope is doing nothing the last popes haven't done. I just find it odd.
I will admit that I like Francis more than the previous two popes. But any negative feelings I have for Benedict are mostly due to his role as head of the CDF, rather than as pope. He is a very intelligent man and a great theologian but it is unfortunate, in my opinion, that he was promoted to the CDF role by JPII, and that he then became pope. It is instructive that when Benedict resigned, the Cardinals chose someone to replace him who appears to be quite opposite.
I think Francis draws interest due to his humility, accessibility, and his way of communicating. He may do the same things but he does them differently. Saying daily Mass in a chapel with Vatican employees and living a simpler lifestyle are notable examples. He seems much more down to earth than other recent popes. Like John XXIII, but in a 21st century way. To me and many others, Francis acts like a pope of all of the faithful, rather than the CEO of the Vatican.
It is highly doubtful that Francis, or any pope, will win the Peace Prize. There seems to be an anti-Catholic Church hierarchy bias on the selection committee which precludes such a choice. Plus, more and more winners are coming from third world areas, especially Asia and Africa. So his chances are slim. But at the same time he says he doesn't want it, and points out those who deserve it more. He is that kind of guy.
