The Sabbath Commandment Ex 20:8-11 says that the "seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD Thy God".

And in Ex 16 we find these words "Tomorrow IS the Sabbath".

In Gen 2:1-3 the Sabbath is the 7th day of creation week - and according to Genesis 2 it is then that the Sabbath is "Sanctified", blessed, set apart.

The Baptist Confession of Faith, the Westminster Confession of Faith, D.L. Moody and many others admit that the "Sabbath was made for mankind" (Mark 2:27) and it began in Eden.

So then when - or how - was the Sabbath Commandment changed? How was the obligation, sanctity, blessing of the 7th day transferred to week-day-1??

One Catholic Author - of a commentary on the Baltimore Catechism - after Vatican II describes it this way

And how does the Bible define the "Solemnity" - the blessed, sanctified and binding obligation of the Sabbath -- in actual scripture.

Gen 2
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. 2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Ex 20: 8, 11
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

So how is that the Law of God is up for "edit" for change? For taking one of the Commandments - and "repointing it" so that now "another day" is blessed, sanctified, and made holy??

It is simply called transferrence. Nothing more. Nothing less. The church has the authority to do this. It's like the government changing the route of a highway.

Indeed the RCC claims to have the authority to do that.

Possibly one more reason why the "sola scriptura" model of Acts 17:11 and Mark 7:6-13 gets some push back on certain threads by those who agree with the RCC's right to do such things.

Because the Third (the Sabbath) Commandment depends upon the remembrance of God's saving works and because Christians saw the definitive time inaugurated by Christ as a new beginning, they made the first day after the Sabbath a festive day, for that was the day on which the Lord rose from the dead. The Paschal Mystery of Christ is the full revelation of the mystery of the world's origin, the climax of the history of salvation and the anticipation of the eschatological fulfilment of the world. So their claim to tinker with one of the TEN commandments - repointing it from the seventh day --- to "week day 1" is significant.


SDA claim to use the Catechism to show what Catholics believe. Are they telling the truth about what Catholics believe?

The facts we have seen so far - answer the question quite well.


It is the transferring of the solemnity of the Sabbath to the Lord's Day (Sunday).

We "gentiles" like to think that we are a big important part of "mankind" -- as it turns out. :)

How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?

I believe that the Sabbath question today is a vital one for the whole country. It is the burning question of the present time. If you give up the Sabbath the church goes;

The Perpetuity of the Law of God


Very great mistakes have been made about the law. Not long ago there were those about us who affirmed that the law is utterly abrogated and abolished, and they openly taught that believers were not bound to make the moral law the rule of their lives. What would have been sin in other men they counted to be no sin in themselves. From such Antinomianism as that may God deliver us. We are not under the law as the method of salvation, but we delight to see the law in the hand of Christ, and desire to obey the Lord in all things. Others have been met with who have taught that Jesus mitigated and softened down the law, and they have in effect said that the perfect law of God was too hard for imperfect beings, and therefore God has given us a milder and easier rule. These tread dangerously upon the verge of terrible error, although we believe that they are little aware of it.

. The Law of God

  • God gave to Adam a law of universal obedience which was written in his heart, and He gave him very specific instruction about not eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. By this Adam and all his descendants were bound to personal, total, exact, and perpetual obedience, being promised life upon the fulfilling of the law, and threatened with death upon the breach of it. At the same time Adam was endued with power and ability to keep it.


  • The same law that was first written in the heart of man continued to be a perfect rule of righteousness after the Fall, and was delivered by God upon Mount Sinai in the TEN COMMANDMENTS, and written in two tables, the first four containing our duty towards God, and the other six, our duty to man.


  • Besides this law, commonly called the moral law, God was pleased do give the people of Israel ceremonial laws containing several typical ordinances. These ordinances were partly about their worship, and in them Christ was prefigured along with His attributes and qualities, His actions, His sufferings and His benefits. These ordinances also gave instructions about different moral duties. All of these ceremonial laws were appointed only until the time of reformation, when Jesus Christ the true Messiah and the only lawgiver, Who was furnished with power from the Father for this end, cancelled them and took them away.


  • To the people of Israel He also gave sundry judicial laws which expired when they ceased to be a nation. These are not binding on anyone now by virtue of their being part of the laws of that nation, but their general equity continue to be applicable in modern times.


The moral law ever binds to obedience everyone, justified people as well as others, and not only out of regard for the matter contained in it, but also out of respect for the authority of God the Creator, Who gave the law. Nor does Christ in the Gospel dissolve this law in any way, but He considerably strengthens our obligation to obey it

As it is the law of nature that in general a proportion of time, by God's appointment, should be set apart for the worship of God, so He has given in His Word a positive, moral and perpetual commandment, binding upon all men, in all ages to this effect. He has particularly appointed one day in seven for a Sabbath to be kept holy for Him. From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ this was the last day of the week, and from the resurrection of Christ it was changed to the first day of the week and called the Lord's Day. This is to be continued until the end of the world as the Christian Sabbath, the observation of the last day of the week having been abolished.

The Sabbath is still Saturday, no matter which way you look at it. While the RCC did change the day of worship to Sunday. per their authority, they still dont have any power to alter a commandment of God, so Saturday will always be the Sabbath and Sunday a traditional day of worship.

Here I was hoping that this thread would trace the history as to the evolution of Sabbath keeping by the SDA from the Biblical commandment to the current status as not a day of rest but a day of religious meetings and other activities. Oh well, I should have known, given the OP, that it would be a regurgitation of the same old diatribes.

Possibly one more reason why the "sola scriptura" model of Acts 17:11 and Mark 7:6-13 gets some push back on certain threads by those who agree with the RCC's right to do such things.

The Sabbath Commandment Ex 20:8-11 says that the "seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD Thy God".

And in Ex 16 we find these words "Tomorrow IS the Sabbath".

In Gen 2:1-3 the Sabbath is the 7th day of creation week - and according to Genesis 2 it is then that the Sabbath is "Sanctified", blessed, set apart.

The Baptist Confession of Faith, the Westminster Confession of Faith, D.L. Moody and many others admit that the "Sabbath was made for mankind" (Mark 2:27) and it began in Eden.

So then when - or how - was the Sabbath Commandment changed? How was the obligation, sanctity, blessing of the 7th day transferred to week-day-1??

One Catholic Author - of a commentary on the Baltimore Catechism - after Vatican II describes it this way

The Sabbath is still Saturday, no matter which way you look at it. While the RCC did change the day of worship to Sunday. per their authority, they still dont have any power to alter a commandment of God, so Saturday will always be the Sabbath and Sunday a traditional day of worship.
Yes, the Shabbat will always be Saturday. My church only changed the solemnity from the Sabbath to the Lord's Day. If you go to the Catholic Encyclopedia, you will see that Sabbath is defined still as Friday sundown till Saturday sundown. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/s.htm

If you are asking me if I think the Sabbath Commandment is "unchanged" and that man-made-tradition has no legitimacy with God - when man makes wild claims to have "changed the obligation" for the commandment repointing it to week-day-1... God simply considers that claim to edit/alter/change His Law - as a bad idea.

Here I was hoping that this thread would trace the history as to the evolution of Sabbath

There is a book called "From Sabbath to Sunday" that does that very thing. -- By Dr. Samuel Bacchiocchi


And of course you have the Catholic sources already on this thread affirming the basic points.

So also C.H. Spurgeon, D.L. Moody, and the Baptist Confession of Faith when it comes to "the Sabbath in Eden" and binding on all mankind - as we find in Is 66:23 and Gen 2:1-3. Ex 20:11 etc.

God stated the "solemnity of the Sabbath" this way.

"made it holy"
"blessed it"
"Sanctified it".

See Gen 2:1-3 and Ex 20:11.

to "change that" is to "change the Law"
