No. Too many people who were guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of capital crimes have later been exonerated by new (often DNA) evidence. You can never give them their life back if you've taken it.

Should "Lifers" (those who have committed enough crime to merit life in prison) in United States prisons be given the death penalty (be put to death)?

Two things:

It would cost tax payers more to put them to death.

Do you actually think, changing one's sentence from life in prison, to death, would hold up from a constitutional standpoint?

The death penalty is actually much more expensive, though I could support it because it's more humane. Why death penalty advocates don't use that argument more often, I don't know.

In the same direction this kind of a change is unfair to the Jurors involved. They chose life in prison it is unfair to then put blood on their hands.

NO let them stay in prison and be gang raped everyday that is the ticket! ;P.
How hilarious to advocate for men raping men, destroying both in the process. I am chuckling so hard, I think I may throw up. SMH.

Is it more humane to kill them, given prison life?
they didn't ask me when they set up the laws or when they made the prisons and never will .
so I can only answer for myself.
If I was a criminal, I would have wanted a speedy trial and and a speedy death.
but since the guberment offers violent and repeat criminals neither .
I don't have an answer.
I don't think it is fair to put them in there for life and all that nasty that goes with it and then decide to put them on death row after 30 appeals.
I like God's idea about paying the victims for their crimes and not the state.,.... and certainly not we all have to pay for theirs sins for ages and ages .

That's a really bad argument. Let's see how it works in other areas.

"If I was a woman, I wouldn't want an education or the ability to vote, so I don't think women should get either."

"If I was black, I would love to be a slave for a white person, so I think slavery should be legal."

I don't think it is fair to put them in there for life and all that nasty that goes with it and then decide to put them on death row after 30 appeals.

I think many of us would argue that prisoners should be treated humanely, especially those that will never get out.

All states define a life sentence differently. Those states who's sentence is natural life in a life sentence, or that designate life without parole, which is also natural life, would be merciful in execution of justice if they gave the inmate the option to self-terminate if they chose to.

If you allow those with life sentences without parole to self terminate, you would need to give the same right to those who are terminally ill, who want to self terminate and not suffer.

As someone who worked with terminally ill patients, I am all for physician assisted mercy for those who are terminally ill.
