and say,
"I would never serve a God who burns down cities, and floods entire lands, and permits so much famine."
What would be your response?
I'd ask which god they'd prefer? And list the savage pagan god's and goddesses they'd have to choose from. A short list to save time.
Or I'd ask them if they'd prefer to be a humanist and worship the worst example of deity; human, self. Given world history since we've recorded it, while some can say any god is but a myth, human evils and killings are not.
Or maybe they'd just prefer to be god-less. Atheist. No god faith at all. In which case they'd have to realize they're not only optimistic, but are left living in a world full of humans responsible for everything that has ever happened to the world and its people. Good and bad, save for one thing. Humans aren't responsible for how the world and all that exists came into being.

That is all due to.... well, no thing, as far as atheists are concerned. But that there is one thing that exists kind of makes that a bit of a joke.

Really, it's all in how you look at someone making such a statement as:"I would never serve a God who burns down cities, and floods entire lands, and permits so much famine."

Or, you could just smile and say nothing. After all, no matter what any one person believes there is one fact that is inescapable as long as they have a pulse. Their life and their choices.

God is holy. He is a Holy God Who judges. He is perfectly just. If He was not perfectly just, He would not be a Holy God.

The question is, does/did God ever sin? Is His judgement sin?

Thank you.

True, God is holy, God is just; there is no sin in God.
My response to the original question would be this:
To whom shall I go? He has the words of eternal life.

Present scriptures leading to the plan of salvation. Invite a genuine response.

If that person accepted Jesus as Savior, rejoice.
If that person rejected the effort, ask him or her if you could pray.

Pray, or walk away, in either case asking God to bless that person as the Holy Spirit continues to witness.

That's probably the best route;
Can't go wrong with prayer.

first know that it is not God's will that bad things happen. but for every cause there is an effect. for example, God told everyone that the ark of God could only be touched by the priests but uzzah died because he touch the ark to steady it when the oxen stumbled. do you think God was watching and waiting for someone like uzzah to touch the ark just so He could strike them down? no, it was because God spoke and it became law. in other words uzzah sinned and was punished. just as we are punished when we sin. when you speed and get a ticket is it God's fault?

if you do research on every time america did something that was not in isreal's best interest there was a catastrophe that hit america. even though the leaders of this nation made the decisions it is the country itself that got punished. we are responsible for our own actions and we will be blessed oe cursed accordingly. which is why God said that there is life and death, blessing and cursing set before you and that we should choose life.

also people complain about people starving. but i ask you what are you doing about it? many of those that complain are not being part of the solution but the problem. why don't you support someone that is starving? if you say it is not my problem then who's is it? according to the Word it is our problem. could it be that we are too selfish to help and these starving people are just what is happening because of it?

God bless

God is a God of love, a God of justice, a God of understanding, a God of peace...we may not always understand why He does what He does, but I have faith that whatever the reason is for what I am going through there is a blessing at the other side. I may not see it right now, but when I do I need to remember to thank Him for it...good, bad, or indifferent.

I would ask if they thought they were a good person, able to set a plumb line for righteous acts, then go through the law when they said yes.

i.e. have you ever told a lie? What does that make you? have you ever taken something regardless of it's value that doesn't belong to you? What does that make you? And based on their own admission, they'd probably have to admit they were lying thieves.

God has judged the whole world because of sin, 10 out of 10 people will die. Then I'd present how He has allowed a way, out of love, for us to be saved.

I've seen that technique; Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron do that. I've seen the youtube videos. It's pretty informative.
Once in awhile I'll watch parts of the show "On the Box."

I'd simply say something like this:

Famines wouldn't be a problem if people distributed wealth and food equally; we have the technology nowadays to make sure not one person goes hungry. America is full of obese people, Africa has starving people. If the obese didn't overeat, and if we weren't throwing tons of food out to rot because it didn't sell by the Sell-by date on the container, we could easily feed every hungry person on the planet.

The Flood happened because there was so much evil and wickedness that only 8 people in the whole world were goodly people. Would you want to live in a world that was full of murderers, thieves, rapists, and such?

And as for Him burning down whole cities, I'd remind them, that they tried to break into Lot's house just so they could gang-rape the two male angels, even after Lot offered them his virgin daughters. The Angels blinded them with blindness AND THEY KEPT TRYING TO GET AT THE ANGELS TO RAPE THEM AFTER BEING BLINDED.

Would you not do the same to these vile, evil people? These people were worse than prisoners in today's society. The same kinds of people we send to the electric chair in some states.

I would ask how he feels a morally imperfect being could judge God. I would take him to the law of God and demonstrate to him that he is a sinner in need of a Savior, and explain that the judgment of God righteously falls on a sin corrupted world.

Joplin, Missouri. May 22, 2011. F-5 Tornado. 150 people killed. Were those people sinful above all the people that dwell in the US? Are we any better than they? Think about the images of that torn up city. Think of all the grieving homeowners walking about the field of wreckage trying to put their lives back together. Would you worship the living God who sent that tornado?
My answer is YES. He alone has the words of eternal life. I don't care how many cities he's wasted. My God supplies me with INFINITE RICHES. I don't care if he sends a two-by-four beam flying into my head a hundred-and-ninety miles per hour. He has the words of eternal life, he has prepared a place of everlasting rest for me. I've sinned against the Lord an innumerable amount of times, and I surely deserve hell. But Christ paid for all my sins at Calvary, and redeemed me from the curse by being a curse for us. He knew no sin, but he became sin, so that I can be the righteousness of God in him. I have everlasting consolation through Christ Jesus. Though my body will pass away like a leaf, I have an everlasting habitation of unspeakable proportions.

What would the human race do if God didn't let the physics of weather, geology, and fire run its course? What if he didn't allow biology to create cancer or block arteries and everyone knew that they would live to 120 years of age, whereupon they would die?

What would we do with that life that is guaranteed to last until it got boring? Would we struggle to make life happen NOW because we know that we have plenty of time later? The uncertainty of life is one the things that spice up our lives to make us want to move forward, accomplish things, and spend time with people because we just never know when it all ends.

It's difficult to think of a tornado or a heart attack as a gift from God, but it is better than the alternative.

Also, some people forget that amidst great tragedies, there also comes great glories.

How great of a reward awaits those in Heaven who stepped up to help the victims of these tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc?

Deaths happen. It is a sad fact of life. Just because something happens and people die, does not mean we should be angry at God. He is Sovereign, and what He created, He has all rights to destroy if He so wished.

Also, Ecclesiastes (also, Jesus too) has a lot to say about material possessions on the Earth and how quickly those can fade away, but the ones you have waiting for you in Heaven should you put your trust in Him will always be there, for Eternity.

So, you lose your home in a Tornado, or a fire, or an Earthquake. Even if you lost your Earthly Life, there's always Eternity to think about. Earth is but a temporary sojourn and you can't take anything with you when you finish said sojourn.

I would say I follow Jesus Christ and He gave me grace that I did not deserve. I live in a fallen world and my God is Holy. I don't understand everything that happens but He is God and I am not.
