I was baptised 2 years ago and while at first I didn't received the gift of Tongues it did eventually manifest itself in me quite suddenly when I stopped obsessing about it. I will admit that at first I was filled with doubt; what if I was making it up; what if the devil was actually putting words in my mouth - many things that I realise now was the devil's attempt at keeping my mouth firmly shut. Over time I learnt to trust that as long as I was always seeking God's face the words from my mouth would always be of Him.
But I don't know very much about Tongues at all.
And I know it's silly but I feel embarrassed to ask questions of my friends and pastor - it's my own issues and I am letting God work through them, but still... I am new to all this and my new friends have all been Christians for many, many years so I feel silly asking them - though I know they would help or try to help in a heartbeat.
One of the things I was curious about is the fact that... I do not sound like them.
My 'Tongues' sounds different - they all have vaguely the same sounding 'Tongues'. Not that it is being copied, for I believe them to all be genuine, Spirit-filled Christians.
I guess I just wanted to know more about the gift of Tongues...to fill the gaps in my understanding of the whole thing.

Jesus says if our child asks us for an egg we certainly will not give a scorpion!
If you "asked" The Father for His Spirit, that's what you thirsted for, that's what you will be filled with!

"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" (Matt. 7:11)

Over time I learnt to trust that as long as I was always seeking God's face the words from my mouth would always be of Him. But I don't know very much about Tongues at all.
Same thing! except that with tongues you are seeking him and asking Him to give you the words to pray according to his perfect will for you, ministering his love, joy and peace that passes our understanding!

"the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us" (Romans 8:26)

One of the things I was curious about is the fact that... I do not sound like them.
Don't let your natural mind try to work God out. Just desire to trust God and know he will open your appreciation more & more.
There are many languages, all are a bit different, some are very different.
It's common to sound a bit "repetetive if you are a bit nervous.

I guess I just wanted to know more about the gift of Tongues...to fill the gaps in my understanding of the whole thing.
technically, "the gift" refers specifically to the meetings-use of tongues (similarly for "gifts" of faith, wisdom, prophecy etc), *giving* to the church.
In this context, not all Christians, in fact just 2 or 3.
In Acts, which details people becoming Christians they never said "ah, they got the gift of tongues", they said ah, they just received the Spirit when they heard them speak in tongues (Acts 10:44-48, 19:1-6).

Speaking of unknown tongue is motivated by the emotional person's spirit. It is nothing to do with the Holy Spirit since nothing is unknown to the Holy Spirit!

The gift of speaking in tongues, belongs to the Holy Spirit. It is given to us, to enable us to pray directly to God, by our heart or spirit. When we pray in tongues, we praise God and give him thanks by that gift. Speaking in tongues, also edifies us. The original Greek word for 'edify', means to build up, like building a house, brick by brick.
The gift of tongues, makes our spirit stronger, in the ways of God. I believe that it helps us to become more like Jesus Christ, in thoughts, words, and actions. Our character will become more like that of Jesus, when we pray in tongues. Also, our faith will become stronger. Our spiritual senses are developed by the gift of speaking in tongues.

When we speak in tongues, we make the decision to open our mouth, and try to speak, any time we decide. That is our part in using the gift of speaking in tongues. God will not open our mouth. We have to choose to start to speak, and open our mouth. But, what we will speak in tongues, does not depend on us, but on the Holy Spirit, because He gives us the words to speak, as He wills. That is what He does in us.

Read chapters 12 ,and 14 from the 1 Corinthias.

No. Bible doesn't support that!

It is given to us, to enable us to pray directly to God, by our heart or spirit.

Yes, with your spirit. The Holy Spirit may help you in interceding for you.

When we pray in tongues, we praise God and give him thanks by that gift. Speaking in tongues, also edifies us.

You don't need to pray in an unknown tongue that you yourself don't understand!

The original Greek word for 'edify', means to build up, like building a house, brick by brick.

Drug addicts and drunkards feel in the same way.

in the ways of God.

God doesn't speak in an unknown tongue. Nothing is unknown to the Holy Spirit!

I believe that it helps us to become more like Jesus Christ, in thoughts, words, and actions. Our character will become more like that of Jesus, when we pray in tongues. Also, our faith will become stronger. Our spiritual senses are developed by the gift of speaking in tongues.

That is what you imagine! Outside they are back to their old ways of telling lies, etc.

God expects us to speak in a known tongue that has been gifted especially to humans to differentiate from animals.

Read chapters 12 ,and 14 from the 1 Corinthias.

I urge you to read them without prejudice. They were meant for misguided babes of Corinth!

As it's been about 4 weeks since you first asked your question, hopefully your concerns have been put to rest, but if not, as your question can be rather hard to answer on a forum you might have to ask some friends at church for a bit of guidance.

For what it's worth, we mere humans can very easily get in the way with allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through us to the Father so with time and trust your concerns should quickly fall to the side.

At the moment, my favourite definition of praying in the Spirit (tongues) has been provided by Prof. Peter Althouse:

"The Pentecost narrative of Acts 2 is an eschatological event, in which the coming of the resurrection Spirit renews the covenantal community in anticipation of the parousia, and tongues is a theophanic sign of divine self-disclosure like that of the burning bush in the calling of Moses and the giving of the Law. As an eschatological foretaste, speaking in tongues is a cry for liberation, a ‘cry of abandonment; which symbolizes the liberating force of the Spirit in breaking down racial, gender and class barriers. Glossolalia embodies an equalizing impulse in leveling all languages and human strivings, pointing to the inauguration of divine justice and mercy in its ''groaning" for the suffering of creation yearning for liberation".
PS. As this particular forum is rarely used by either Pentecostal or charismatics regarding questions about the things of the Spirit, you might want to shoot over to the Pentecostal/charismatic forum if you want to know more about spiritual matters.
